This volume contains all his later work, from 1945 to his death. The translation succeeds to a remarkable degree in retaining the form as well as the feeling of the original.
Henry Kamen was born in 1936 in Rangoon, of Anglo-Burmese parentage. The winner of an open scholarship to University College, Oxford, he took a First in Modern History in 1960 and was elected to a Senior Scholarship at St. Antony's. He won the Arnold Historical Essay prize in 1961. He learned Russian during his army service from 1955 6o 1957.
These translations were made with the encouragement of Max Hayward (co-translator with Manya Harari of Dr. Zhivago) and George Katkov (who has added some detailed and revealing notes to the volume); the volume has been warmly praised by Sir Maurice Bowra--who has written a Forward--and Sir Isaiah Berlin.« less
