The Pearl - Twentieth-Century Classics
Author: John Steinbeck
A book of great beauty and simplicity, The Pearl can be appreciated on an aesthetic, ecological, or sociological vein. This is a story about a great pearl, a Mexican community, and great dreams and powers in a novel of largesse and quiet profundity.

From my understanding, Steinbeck essentially took an old Mexican fable and put it down on paper (no doubt tweaking it and adding his own spin). It's sort of a morality tale -- one that most people will find familiar: greed, jealousy, and regret.

A very quick read -- it's a good story (and sad).
