While a bit dated, it is still simply the best book to read about the conditions of Slavery in the ante-bellum US. A classic that later volumes have tried to match. There are lots of other good volumes about this subject and time perid in US history, but this is the one to go to first.

Oversized paperback, excellent for African-American studies and American history buffs.
