Certain diseases of the mouth, nasal catarrh, and acute otitis, etc., make the curved lines of suction irregular, but they become regular again when the diseases are cured. The curved lines of suction will become irregular when the temperature of milk is below 20 C. or above 40 C. Idiots are unskilful in suction, and so the curved lines are always irregular. INFANT WELFARE. Growth and Disease. In view of the very meager data in the literature on the relation between growth and disease, C. Schiotz1 instituted a study of growth in Norwegian children, with special reference to goiter, although many other diseases were also studied. He examined 8,727 pupils, city as well as country dwellers, from public and high schools. The body length was measured by him in the forenoon, as the length is known to differ somewhat at different times of the day. He found that growth is equal in both sexes between the ages of 7 to 11 years. The sexes do, however, show some difference in the sixth to seventh year of life, and a marked difference between the ages of 11 to 14 years, girls growing much faster during these years than boys. The author found that accelerated growth predisposes to goiter. This manifests itself through: (1) predisposition of girls; (2) predisposition of those who show accelerated growth; (3) the increase of percentage of goiter individuals—in boys and girls—mainly in the years of greatest growth.
