The novel shows that "life isn't always fair, and that past mistakes of others can have ramifictions for future generations." It's a passionate and intelligent story, yet easy to read. The plot and characters mimic true English history, AN EXCELLENT EPIC!

This is a lengthy family saga, stretching from the Victorian era to the end of World War II, told from the perspective of a father, then several of his sons in turn. The flavor of Cornwall is well-described and there is a bit of a gothic tinge to the story. Aside from some antiquated sexual sentiments (e.g. a husband raping his wife to gain her respect), the characters are well-drawn and the pacing keeps the story moving.
