I saw a posting in the book bazaar for a book on my wishlist, asking if anyone wanted it to contact her. So I sent a PM asking if this was an unpostable copy, and this is the reply I received:

I'm offering in the Book Bazaar because if I simply post it, I can only get 1 credit. It is too heavy for that. I've taken several losses over mailing single heavy hardbacks for one credit. When I asked if I could have even an extra unpostable sent in addition to one credit, I was chewed out by a PBS person. I was told if I wouldn't accept one credit for a hardback, not to list it! So, I'm not listing this book. I have a lot of current hardbacks I am not listing. At Frugalreader, 2 credits were given. So, if someone makes a purchase of 3 paperbacks from me which gives me 3 credits, I can add that book to that package and not go in the hole.

wow- not only against the rules, but this is not even a heavy book, juts a regular old fiction hardcover that I have sent and received MANY of, with out complaint- and for less than $3 too.

message has been fowarded to TPTB

Glad you sent in a feedback on them. Some people just can't learn to live within the rules sometimes. Makes you just want to tell them that if they don't like the rules, nobody is tying them to the site and forcing them to stay. Theyare always welcome to go back to Frugal Reader, oh, wsit, didn't I hear they went belly up? Could have been because they couldn't make all the members abide by the rules, and let others get away with whatever they wanted? Who knows.

The member should look into selling her book on one of the many used book sites online if she thinks it's too heavy to send for one credit.  Glad you let the PBS team know about this.  She IS listing the book, just doing it in the book bazaar instead of on her shelf.

That sounds very familiar, I don't think its the first time she's tried it so it obviously isn't sinking in that she cannot do that on PBS.  Glad you turned her in so they can hopefully deal with her this time. This is NOT Frugalreader deary.

Misread the post, thought it said she wanted 2 credits for the book. It is allowed to offer freebies with a multiple book request as the condition.

The more I read about other trading sites the happier I feel about coming to PBS.  I feel blessed and lucky.

This seems to be happening a lot lately.

I know a lot of FR members came here after it disappeared, so perhaps that's the confusion.  But after it's been explained what the rules are, he/she should be able to play nice with the other kids.

Ah, that might explain it. I didn't realize one of the other swapping sites had bit the dust.

This attitude always amuses me (regardless of the subject it applies to).

Gee, let's compare this thriving business unfavorably to this other business that is no longer in business.  Like wow, I can hardly wait to apply a failed template to this business that is flourishing...so it can also go down the drain.  Dang, I really hope these people aren't voters lol!

ETA - Yes, FrugalReader closed at the end of the year.

So, this is a new member so after she sent me the PM about wanting 2 credits for a book, and asking me for feedback,I sent her this:

Wow- that is totally against club rules. 1 book = 1 credit no matter how large, heavy or heavily wishlisted- that's the beauty of this club. Also, the lost symbol is not my any means a heavy book- it costs less than $3 to mail a book that size, only about $.50 more than a mass market paperback.

This is the nasty reply:

you asked WHY I was offering the book FREE and I told you! That is not against club rules. I see frequently where free books are offered and it is MY choice to offer what I want to as a free book. That is 4 books for 3 credits which is less than one credit per book! And, my copy IS heavy! It should be no concern of yours as to WHAT a member chooses to offer FREE. It is still on the bestseller list and is a good gift! I'm just trying to clear my shelves. I resent the backhanded way you kept inquiring about the book. Actually, common sense should dictate that 4 books for 3 is a bargain!!

Obviously, YOU don't have to take advantage of the sale if you don't want to. THAT'S THE BEAUTY OF THE BOOK BAZAAR. YOU CAN OFFER DEALS AND PEOPLE CAN EITHER TAKE THEM OR IGNORE THEM!

Thanks for your inquiry; now go back to cleaning teeth!

I hope TPTB boots her butt off this site.

I misread this line the first read through. This is actually acceptable as long as it is done in the Bazaar. You CAN offer whatever you want free with whatever order you desire. It is perfectly legit to say "order 3 books from me and I will include Book X for free". Most of the time people won't take them up on the deal, but I have seen it done and asked PBS about it and they said the freebies are what they are.

The only thing wrong with this is it violates the "(6) No trying to jump the Wish List "line" by offering or asking for postable Wish Listed books." rule from the red sticky thread at the top of the Bazaar. She's correct that swapping 4 books for 3 credits is not against the site's rules. This case is kind of borderline to me. She's trying to save on shipping by sending out multiple books at once, which is allowed. Nobody would care at all if the offer was "Order 3 paperbacks and get a free postable copy of 'Angels and Demons'". The only reason it's a problem is because the freebie she's offering is a wish list book.

The "no postable wish list books" rule is already somewhat flexible anyway. If you happen to have a boxed set that includes one or more wish list books, you are allowed to post that in the Bazaar and you can ask for up to 1 credit for each book in the set. You can also swap postable wish list books in the thread titled "**March** Wishlisted Multiples ONLY....save on shipping (SEE RULES)", and you can ask up to 1 credit for those books as well.

So let's see, how could she do this legitimately:

  • she could read a bunch of other wish list books and offer them all in the multiples thread
  • she could make up a set of "The da Vinci Code", "Angels and Demons" and "The Lost Symbol" and ask for 3 credits for it
  • she could damage the book enough to make it unpostable and then her original deal would be o.k.

I am not questioning her being alllowed to offer a deal. The post in the book bazaar made no mention of it- all it said was contact me if you want x book.

So I asked if it was unpostable, and got told if I wanted it I needed to order 3 more books. She then ASKED ME FOR FEEDBACK if this was fair. To my understanding, this is against club rules to hold WL books hostage unless you order more ( unless you are in that 1 special thread, but this was not there), so I told her. She then went off - not only telling me she could do waht she wanted, but attacking me personally in her PM. To me- that is the unacceptable part. If you are a new member and you ask someone who has been here a while for feedback- take it without whining.

and one of my buddies posted the book to me- so I guess I am worth almost $3  in someones eyes :)

I don't think you are understanding her deal. She is not saying you had to order 3 more. She is saying that she is giving the book away for FREE with the request of 3 books from her shelf. I totally agree that posting a blind deal and then telling people they need to order 3 books when they ask is sneaky, but totally OK by club rules. It is no different than offering a 4 for 3 on your bookshelf except she has designated the free book.

FWIW, I do hope no one ever takes people like this up on the deal because IMO it is asking for more than 1 credit for the WL book and then tossing in some stuff from your shelf. When I questioned the team about this before their first answer was "NO! We don't allow that." When I pressed for clarification on the FREE aspect because there used to be a member that did this repeatedly, they said that the club cannot really control what books are offered as Freebies so even though they don't like it, its not against club rules.
