Since other people have given a synopsis of the book I want to tell you how a reader might react. It is a Good book. The writing style is different than what I've usually found in this genre, but that's not a bad thing at all. There are books that are good and even though you still can predict a little of what is/will be happening they are books you give a positive review. There were three spots in which my mouth just fell open -- and the friend I was sitting beside said:
1. The characters can't hear you talk back to them.
2. Do you realize how dumbstruck you look?
It's nice to find a book that can knock you for a loop in a wonderful way.

Having read as many books as I have (thousands), and in so many different genres, it took talent to throw me that much. But the twists in the plot worked well, very well.

This was the first time I had ever read a Lisa Gardner book and afterward, I was hooked! She captures the deception of the killer, the determination and fear of the wife, and the hard work of the police and others involved in the plot of the story.

I have had to then purchase every book she has written thus far and read them as well and I am happy to say that none of them have been a disappointment.

Lisa Gardner writes a very good procedural novel which her lengthy acknowledgements pages make clear is due in part to a great deal of research of at least the interviewing variety. Couple that with a skill at wrenching every conceivable emotion out of her characters and you have a roller-coaster experience and then some. The only flaw here is that some situations are just a litle contrived.

I'm sorry to say I was disappointed with the plot. I need to read of characters in a book that are somewhat based on reality; some of these chacters almost had a comic-book "super hero" aspect to them. Perhaps if I had finished the book, I might have changed my opinion, but I lost interest.

A non-stop, page-turner of a suspense novel. It is not a who-done-it, since you know who the killer is right from the start. Even with revealing who the bad guy is from the beginning, Garder still manages to throw in a few surprises. I am not a big fan of serial killer books, but I could not put this one down. Excellent writing, excellent charaters.
