The waitlist is always so long for books of this type and they cost so much new, especially when you can't be sure they will be worth the price unless you already know the author.  So here's my question, and maybe I shouldn't ask it on this site, but is there any place where you go to buy them used or cheaper?  Surely somewhere out there people have a "naughty craigslist" situation going that doesn't require gloves and dark glasses to peruse, or even a legit site that sells used books (besides Amazon where shipping is ridiculous!)?  I know everyone loves posting them here because they disappear like easy cheerleaders in a slasher movie, but waiting for them to become available is truly painful.  Any hints, or should I delete the question since I'm asking about other book sites?

Try your local used bookstore. I don't read erotica, but am familiar with it. Our UBS has it mingled in with with regular contemporary romance!

Donna, I read mostly erotic romance (pretty evident by my WL, and reviews).   I used to get it on ebay, because I couldn't find what I liked in major book store chains.  My local UBS's have a minimal selection, but sometimes I get lucky.   But, times have changed and now my local B & N, Borders and BAM have a selection.   I have also ordered directly on line, from Ellora's Cave and New Concepts Publishing.  My favorite thing to do now, is to buy a B & N gift card, then use it online to order Siren Publishing titles.

I am active in many of the erotica swap games, here at PBS.   Sometimes there are two or three erotica swaps running at the same time.  What I like most about PBS is chatting with other people who read what I read (and aren't ashamed to admit it).

Over the months, I've found a few "swapping buddies".   I'll post a title to their WL, and if they have something on my WL, they post it to me.

I'm sending you a buddy request.

Betsy

half.com, amazon.com used, I also signed up for Borders rewards and use their coupons if there's one I want..amazon is also decent on prices. locally I have a used book store that I occasionally find stuff in and halfprice books is pretty predominant and I've found lotsa stuff there. also check out ellorascave.com they periodically have awesome sales and had one going the other day with 2 free books of their choice with a minimum purchases. last november or so i stocked up big time.

Amazon is pretty good about the used books, but there's a fair number of us here that swap erotic novel.  I've sent you a 'buddy invitation.  I'll give you a list of my other buddies and swap among ourselves before offering them here on the discussion forums - where they get snapped up really fast - BEFORE we post them to the FIFO lists.  That's why the waits are endless.  If I have just one book, I will post directly to FIFO because it's only fair.

There is a wishlist thread on Love and Romance and another on Paranormal and both get plenty of our favorite smut - as we like to call it.  Everything from Lora Leigh to Lauren Dain to Maya Banks to Kimberly Zant (I just shipped out two of her books in the last two weeks).  So patience and join the group. Popular stuff.

I wish I understood how those swap games worked.  I'd play if I could just work out the rules.

I don't read it myself, but it seems like the people who do have pretty good luck with the Ellora's cave sales.  Somebody will usually post here about it when there is one going on.  I never see them at my UBS, and except for one year where they seemed to have lots of them, not much at the library sales here either.  They seem to move pretty steadily through the WL thread here though.

I buy mine on Half.com.  You can use your Ebay account there and keep a WL there so you can easily see the lowest price on the books you want.

I also get a lot from Games.  I'm also in the Erotica Virtual Box (also on the Games forum).  We're between rounds now so we're taking new signups!  You just have to have 2 Erotica books to put into the "box" to join and it'll cost you 2 credits (which will be returned when you leave the box as long as you stay in for 2 rounds).  When it's your turn to pick, you simply pick the books you want from the box and replace them with an equal number of books.  You do have to deposit additional credits if you want to take more than 2 books out at a time.  The books  you pick are yours, sent by whomever put them in the box.  When someone else in the box requests one of  yours, you send it out to them.

If you want to join that, now's the time!  You're going to need a minimum of 4 books though (2 to put into the box when you join and 2 to replace the 2 books you can take out).  Plus, the box does not allow duplicate titles so a few other books on hand is a good idea in case someone else puts in a book you were planning to put in.

I've cultivated a good relationship with my UBS - they hold all erotica that comes in for me to get first dibs on.  They have some lady from a Friends of Library group that brings in a box each month or so before there library sale to swap for other stuff; either the erotica's don't sell at the sale or they don't want to display this stuff.

I haven't had any luck finding erotica at my local UBS - either they don't have it or someone is getting it before me! I find it's hard to spend the money for a new book where you have no idea if the author is any good (and face it, some of the erotica is really badly written...even after reading the exerpts from ellora's cave or samhain publishing, you sometimes end up with a really bad book). I do buy some new books from Amazon but only for the authors that I know I like. I end up buying most of my books from eBay.  You need patience as sometimes there are bidding wars for some of the more popular stuff and it can take some time to find the books you like (especially if you buy some of the older stuff). But you can get a good deal. I also buy some books from half.com.

Most of my wish list here is erotica.  I also joined the erotical virtual box and that's fun. It does require that you have at least 4 books (or more as you can take out more than 2 books in your turn if you provide more credits.) I do wish that there was an erotica discussion forum here - asking about erotica authors in the Love & Romance forum doesn't seem quite right!

I don't even have a UBS in town.  The library doesn't carry any erotica.  I have to get all of mine online.

I used to find a lot of them at Half-price books if you have one near you. Also Ellorascave.com and Amazon  frequently have sales.  Unfortunately you have to get in line for a lot of them on PBS but htey do get posted regulary.  You also have to resign yourself ot buying some because if no one buys them then there's no one to post them here.

I also recommend playing the games.  There's constantly WL erotica games going on and you usually just need 1 WL book to play.

So load up your WL and then keep scouting out the thrift stores and UBS.  I occassionally find then at the thrift store.

Jena, Here's a game that includes erotica.  It's paranormal though.  I don't know if you like that or not.

I buy most of mine.  And many of my erotic books are ebooks and can't be swapped.  My 'keeper' titles are all bought, in several cases directly from the publishers because they were unavailable elsewhere - except at inflated prices.

Be aware that New Concepts Publishing's binding quality sucks and the adhesive used allows pages to easily pull loose.  You can stick them back in and they'll stay, but still, the pages aren't square and the print quality is cheap.  They're overpriced.

I've been keeping my eyes peeled for them as well, and the last 2 times I have been in Borders (once in a larger store and once in an outlet) I have seen some Ellora's Cave titles on sale for around 4.99 or so. It definitely pays to go through those sale bins!

Wow!  Great ideas and places to check.  Here in the heartland of Kansas it's a little more conservative, I think.  Barnes and Noble doesn't carry any erotica except the stuff in the "Sex and Relationships" section (although come on, are those Penthouse Letters books any less smutty than an Ellora's Cave or Siren novel!!  Maybe because they are aimed more toward men!-must be another example of intelligent design-ooohh, don't get me started on that!)  Our Waldenbooks does carry them, though.  They used to have better discounts than they do now, but every once in a while they have a good coupon or sale and I take advantage of it, although you have to hope they have what you want in stock the day or two the sale/coupon is good because they won't let you use it on a special order.  The USB and library sales etc don't carry them, in fact the USB buyer always pushed them back at me if I brought hem in in my "to be traded" stack.  I alway wanted to say "Don't you know these will fly out and make you a ton of money," but I just sighed and schleped them back home to put on PBS where they can be appreciated.  The other places mentioned I am definitely going to check into and thanks for the info!  I have always been worried I can't figure out the rules of the swap games, but I think I am going to try it, I'm emailing a couple of you who mentioned them and also added any who PMed a buddy request to me to my list.  Just want to say, again, how grateful I am for the sharing and the fun comments.  Thanks!

Whoops-ETA I meant UBS, not USB!  Let's leave the universities of California out of it.

OOOHHH-good news for us!  I was checking out the Ellora's Cave site like you all suggested for deals and found out Lora Leigh has a new book coming out-two short stories in a book called Surrender to Fire.  I searched for it under Lora Leigh and it's not under her name yet, but it is listed under the ISBN and I am NUMBER 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on the list-Yeehaw!  Here's the link :

http://www.paperbackswap.com/book/details/9781419959301-9781419959301

I hope that works!

ETA-okay, it works!  And FYI, the first story I have and I bet a lot of you do, too.  It's the Bound Hearts #1 with Cole and Tess, but I hadn't heard of the second, called Fyre Brand.  I hate it when they put an old story with a new one and charge full price-GGGRRRRR!

ETA again-the second story is a repeat as well, although I don't have it, from a story collection printed/called Elemental Desires.

Sorry-not near as exciting as it started out to be-talk about premature exultation....

I'm in Southern Maryland and my library has no erotica as far as I can tell.  I do find an occassional book that had considerable erotic content and I wonder if they don't know it does.  But they don't have any like Lora Leigh or Ellorascave type books. But they do have a couple Shannon McKenna's and some Diane Whitesides.  I'm wondering if someone up at the top doesn't know of the erotic content.

I don't know if anyone mentioned them but there is also LooseID and Sahmain publishing. Don't know how often they have sales but it can't hurt to keep checking on them.
