This most extraordinary of heroes, a major figure in the early mythological period, was destined from birth to be the guardian and savior of the Iranian people. Throughout his life's span of six hundred years this giant consistently upheld the cause of Iran against the foes and agents of "darkness,", witches, demons, and sorcerers. And it was the saga of Rustam that inspired the great body of art from which the plates in the present volume have been selected, plates which are representative of some of the most memorable of Persian miniature art from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries.
This volume features nine full-color plates with excellent text and commentaries by William Lillys, Assistant to the Director of the Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, New Jersey, and graduate student of Oriental art at Columbia University.« less
