I would like to tag all of my RL books. I read in the Help Docs that PBS is okay with personal tags but (from the Help Docs):

  • Members can use these, but there is almost always a better way to do what you're trying to accomplish

So.. does this mean I should use the "note" option? I am confused.

I use notes for these type of things--usually to make a note of release dates or if the book is available somewhere else. I only use tags for the sort of things tags are normally used for outside of PBS land --genre, themes, etc... I don't use personal tags at all. I find them distracting and think they clutter up the listings, but of course that's just my personal opinion. Tags, if properly implemented, could be a great benefit to PBS, but as it stands now, I don't really see how they are helpful to many members (outside the personal tags).

ETA: Sorry to be nosy, I'm just wondering (and I've wondered this in the past too about others) what is the benefit or purpose of tagging books that are on the RL?

Well, who knows when they're going to implement the "new" wishlist, but I would like to be able to tag all of my RL books when/if that change occurs and the RL is merged with the WL. The books on my RL are books that I want, but not right now (since I don't have the credits for them). Being able to tag my RL books would allow me to get rid of my RL and, therefore, not worry about when the WL change is coming.

If you tag your own books on your RL they are then listed all together and can be linked to a post when you are looking for a deal or just looking.  Some are starting to use this method in case the RL goes away some day.  Lots of members really rely on RL's and if they went away, they'd lose all that info...and they don't want the RL books on their WL - yet.  So basically we're hedging our bets this way.

I use both notes and tags.  i only tag books I can't find and really want, but not badly enough to displace a WL book.  I occasionally tag books that don't have some information that is useful like which number in a series it is.  I've also found some books that re-use the ISBN and the info can be confusing.

Thanks, Amy! I've wondered about that for a while.

On possible caveat about tagging them for this purpose, if someone decides they don't like your tag, they can mark it as inappropriate, which can (and has) result in the deletion of your tags. I know there has been a few very upset members over this. I don't care for personal tags, but I don't mark them as inappropriate, either as that is not what the inappropriate button is for.

I have most of my RL books tagged.  It's fine.  What's not OK is tagging books with "unpostable" or "no dust jacket"-you should use notes for that.

The only problem with using the note feature for RL books is that you can't just bring up a list of books you've put notes on like you can with tags.  Also if you tag then you can put a link in your signature and invite people to offer you a deal-if you want to do this.

I tag by RL books for 2 reasons: I sometimes I put a link to them in my signature so others can see what books I'm looking for and because of this ever impending new WL with the combined lists.  I don't want a list with over 1,000 books on it so I'm tagging the RL books and removing them from my RL list.  I can just look under the tag cloud to pull up a list of my RL books. The tags show up when I'm looking at someone's shelf. So if they're offering a deal I can see my tag and decide if I want to order them or not.

Okay, so.. I'm going to do it. Hopefully people won't report my tags as inappropriate.

Thanks for all of the responses!

Ir you keep them very short (code you understand) they probably won't bother anyone.  In a way, it's too bad that the personal tags can't be turned off for those people who don't like seeing them.

I personally quit using the Tags as people are still deleting them for whatever reason....I now only use the Notes feature which works beautifully.

I like the notes as well.  I keep them on books that I've read because they can have info I want and they stay with the book so that I see it much sooner than I do the BIR link.  I love the notes.  The real reasons for using the tags is for making a link for other people to see and in case the RL ever does go away.

I would use just the notes if there was a way to list them.  But you can only see them when you are looking at that book.

From what I understand of the possible new wishlist, your reminder list books would be merged into your wishlist, but would not be actively on your wishlist.  (Just like now you may have individual books on your bookshelf on hold.)  You would be able to sort your wishlist by active and "non-active" (or "on-hold" or whatever term they will call the books that used to be on your reminder list.)  That way you could see a list of only "reminder" books or only "wishlist" books, and theoretically, easily check and delete the reminder ones when & if you wanted to.  However, if the new wishlist ever happens, we won't know what the final result will look like until it is in effect.

I wouldn't want my reminder books merged with my wishlist either, but at this point I'm going to leave them alone--I've finally stopped worrying about the new wishlist and will only start worrying about it when it actually happens.

When you add a Note to a book, PBS will add a little yellow sticky note picture on top of the book picture.  When viewing your Lists (WL, RL, etc) you can hover your mouse over the yellow sticky note to see the contents of your note.

That works pretty good for us.  We quit using tags.  Here's a picture of the Yellow Sticky Notes

I agree with you Mary. Notes don't do much for me because most of my tags I am looking to get lists from. Having to hover over a post-it on the book doesn't do me any good in those cases. I do use the notes for copy specific stuff like -unpostables, BCEs, or books offered in a game. I still use my personal tags for creating lists for myself. No one has messed with them in a while, I think the site got tired of getting complaints from us when personal tags got removed by people incorrectly marking them as innappropriate so they made it not so easy for them to get removed completely.

Right if the book is on a list somewhere. But if it's not on a list then you can't just click  on My Notes and bring up all the books that have that note. So if I can't remember the book I put the note on then it does me no good.  See what I'm saying. I don't want all those books going on a combined listed.  So I tag them and then delete them from my reminder list. Then I can go to My Tag Cloud and bring up all the books I've tagged with that tag and see all the books I had on my reminder list.  Can't do that with notes.

I used notes on my TBR list to mark as unpostable.  When I have a book coming to me from a BOB deal, a Bazaar deal, Bookmooch or a game-I add it back to my RL and use the notes to prevent me from ordering it again.

As long as we're putting our wishes out there - I'd love for the tags to be an option that could be turned off like the stuff in people's signature lines.  That might make it impossible to use our own tags, though!  But it would be nice

Ruth - you can shut them off in your settings. It does make using them impossible. Well you could use them, but you could never see the ones you are using :-P
