Long afterward, Alexander von Reckenburg learned from his wire the story of her father's strange masquerade. Lord Fredrick knew, that, previous to his death, Count Franz had executed a will, leaving his property to his son Alexander. My lord was certain, too, that Herbert von Reckenburg had found and destroyed this deed. Realizing the corrupt condition in which the Thirty Years War had left the courts, and suspecting some fraudulent design upon Herbert's part, he resolved to take a hand in the matter himself. Several weeks before the suit came up in court, he wrote to the Emperor, laying the whole matter before him. The latter, with whom my lord had some favor, granted him the permission he asked, only stipulating that if his suspicion of fraud should prove groundless, his friendship for Captain von Reckenburg should in no wise influence his duty as a juror. Thereupon my lord went to the city, disguised himself as a miller, and managed to be included among the twelve who were to sit in judgment in the suit. Then he dispatched a messenger to the Emperor, telling him of the plot to corrupt the court, and received in return an instrument reversing the decision which Lord Fredrick was certain would be rendered. Thus Captain von Reckenburg became Count of Elderhazen. THE END.
