One of my favorite phrases is "homosexual lifestyle."  Because of course, there is only a single "lifestyle" which all homosexuals have and that lifestyle is so dramatically different from the "heterosexual lifestyle."  Yep, it's a good term all right.  Sounds just ominous enough that it can cover whatever fantasy they have in their head.

I think it is used by those who feel being gay is a choice. Using the word lifestyle equates it with any other choice of living in a particular way...living a green lifestyle if you are environmental conscious, or a fast lifestyle if you party, etc.

It shows a degree of ignorance about homosexuality, IMO.

You know, I'm not homosexual, but every time I see that phrase being used, I want to say, "So you don't approve of the homosexual lifestyle, huh?  Guess it's a good thing you weren't born homosexual!"  I honestly don't get the phrase either, and have to agree with Charlie, that people using it must think it's a chosen thing.  I wonder how these people would feel is someone said they didn't approve of their "heterosexual lifestyle" or their "female lifestyle" or some other nonsense.  Sigh.

Here's something that always strikes me as funny. The folks who think it's a choice tend to be the same ones who are afraid the gays are going to spread like wildfire. Clearly they think "the gay lifestyle" is a more attractive choice than heterosexuality!     ; )

Good point Dan!  I have yet to understand why they think people would choose to be part of a minority group that the government has basically put it's stamp of approval on to discriminate against and hate.  Yep, if I was going to choose to be in a minority group, that's the one I would choose!  I love it when people call me horrible names, deny me rights, and say it's okay to hate me cause God does.  There's definitely a shortage of logic going around.

Not only that, but people die because they "choose" this "lifestyle".  Yes, it's a "choice" worth dying for.  Doncha know.

/me bangs head against desk.

Some people will *never* get it.

I wish the gays would stop shoving their lifestyle in my face.

just kidding.

I really never thought about the term homosexual lifestyle as being offensive, but I can definitely see that POV now that you guys have brought it up.  I think they should say, "I disagree with the homosexual genes" instead.

the ignorance really does astound me.  Every day something reminds me that the ignorance is live and well, but it still shocks me every time.

LOL, there you go, Mindy!  And I disagree with the genes that made me have brown-hair....I just know I was born to be a redhead!

I think it's sad that there are people who choose to live an ignorant discriminatory homophobic lifestyle. I feel bad for them and those that have to be around them.

BTW, if I'm gay but single, not dating anyone, am a gay virgin, and haven't been to a gay club in the past 3 years, am I still living the "homosexual lifestyle"? If someone could clarify that for me, it would be appreciated. I'm afraid they're going to revoke my gay license soon.

Mindy, I wish the gays would *start* shoving their lifestyle (well, and other things, too) in my face :) OK, that was probably TMI for some people.

LOL, Julien.

Where is the "gay license" bureau?  What kind of documentation do you have to present to obtain said license?

It was intended as a joke when I said it too.  Just wanted to clarify.

Plus, words have different connotations when used within the community vs. being used by outsiders. The reappropriation of words like "queer" in the gay community and "n*****" in the black community is an interesting socio-linguistic phenomenon. I think I wrote a paper about it once.

ETA: LOL, Lauren - GMTA :)

I have a decent job, I have a kid, a nice house, I have never been to a club or done any drugs, I have never had legal problems or been arrested.  I have a stable partnership, (I moved in with him nearly 9 years ago).  This is my lifestyle.  I am homosexual.  Thus I have a "homosexual lifestyle."  I like to think the heterosexuals are just jealous that my relationship has lasted longer than many of theirs.  ;-)

In all seriousness, "gay lifestyle" doesn't bother me as much as references to "the trans lifestyle" does.  Now that is just annoying especially when it is said with contempt by LGB people.  Makes my head hurt.

Well I love you all, whatever your "lifestyle" may or may not be.  Tonight mine has consisted of eating cheese fries and cookies to cheer myself up:)

Look out Jessie, or you will be living the "fat" lifestyle that I am currently living. ;P

I know I can always come to this forum to find kind, gentle people.  That says more than anything anyone else could ever say.

(((hugs)))

Dan said: The folks who think it's a choice tend to be the same ones who are afraid the gays are going to spread like wildfire. Clearly they think "the gay lifestyle" is a more attractive choice than heterosexuality!     ; )

I once heard an anti-gay speech by a "Christian" minister - I swear I am not making this up - who said that homosexuality had to be suppressed and opposed because "we all know that gay sex is much hotter than straight sex."  He went on to say that men knew exactly how to turn other men on, and women knew exactly what to do to other women.  If that behavior was tolerated, no one would be straight.

I think he told everyone a whole lot about himself.  I really hope he wasn't married.

LOL, you guys crack me up!  :-)

As we always ask, "why does everyone else get a life, and we just have a lifestyle?"

And anything with the word "homosexual" in it makes me cringe.  Gay encompasses our whole lives, homosexual strictly defines us by who we have sex with.

Jeanne, that's a funny question, but a valid question.

You all are sooooooooooo wonderful. I always feel like I am home when I visit here. I do believe they are afraid we have it right and they don't when it come to relationships. Yes I know we have those who use and abuse in our family and those who just want to play around. Then we have the wonderful people who are in Life Relationships. Those who take care of each other and are a true testimony to LOVE. You don't hear about them but they are out there.
