Has anyone read this? It was a a lot different than I thought it would be. I was really enjoying it until the last 1/4 or so. I found the rest slightly ridiculous. The writing was pretty strong most of the way through, so I think that's why the end disappointed me so much- it felt like a bad teen novel about witches that I would have read in 7th grade. I loved the library and archives scenes and the setting (Salem area) is one I enjoy in fiction.

So overall, my reaction is lukewarm. I enjoyed it, but wish the last 1/4 didn't make me shake my head.

I'd just like to know what others thought about it Anyone love it? Hate it?

Oh Whippoorwill,

That's too bad about the ending. I was looking forward to reading it. You just made culling my wishlist that much easier.

I felt the same way!!  I enjoyed the story and was going to add it to my "keepers" shelf, but after I finished it I changed my mind.  I thought I had lost my place and missed some of the chapters since the last part didn't seem to go with the rest of the book.

I'm not sorry I read it, it was really interesting!  The ending was just disappointing.

I don't mean to dissuade anyone from reading it. As Jean said, I'm not sorry I read it. Just wish it had been a little better in the end. Some people have really enjoyed the ending.

I usually have pretty opposite reactions to a lot of popular books (meaning I usually don't get what the fuss is all about).

edited to clarify.

I don't mean to dissuade anyone from reading it <---Don't worry, If you're disappointed, I know I'll be too. I am hypercritical.

I usually have pretty opposite reactions to a lot of popular books.

So do I, but I'am even more critical with popular, all-the-rage books.

Laura, I know what you mean about being more critical with all the rage books. I usually don't read them, at least not the same year they are released. I read this one because I had high hopes for it. I'm usually disappointed by books that everyone raves about.

I liked it.  The ending didn't bother me although I saw it coming.  The one I didn't like that everyone else seems to is The Heretic's Daughter

This is interesting to me. I've requested this book at the library, but the list of others who want it is REALLY long.....I was curious what stirred up the interest.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm fascinated with stories about the Salem witch trials.  This one has a different spin on the subject.
