ISBN 1887942246 - I'm becoming more impressed, not so much with Hooked on Phonics as with author/illustrator Barney Saltzberg. If I ever get through reviewing all 15 of the Kindergarten level books, I may have to see what else the man's done.
Pig Wig is relaxing on a park bench when her friend Cat comes along. Cat accidentally sits on Pig Wig's hat, making Pig Wig quite sad. Cat makes it up to her by offering the cap on his (her?) head.
Saltzberg continues the pattern of introducing characters into stories with previously-met characters (see ISBN 188794222X Cat (Hooked on Phonics, Book 1), ISBN 1887942238 Rag (Hooked on Phonics, Book 2)). This impresses me because I think children like familiarity. On the other hand, I continue to be annoyed by the coloring book style illustrations, which are mostly unattractive for their lack of color. The text is very simple, along the lines of the oldest Dick and Jane primers, and young readers will find that a big help.
I highly recommend the entire Hooked on Phonics series. My son is only four and is already starting to read and has mastered the first 5 Hooked on Phonics books. It makes teaching your child to read dummy proof!
