England is still dealing with reprisals from the Great Rebellion. And the Upright Men are either hiding out or trying one last time to kill those in power. Athelstan and Sir John have to deal with these and a number of murders which don't seem to be associated with the Great Revolt. It becomes personal for the friar as whoever is killing people also wants---and tries---to kill Athelstan.

Keeps you wondering until the bloody end.
