I don't have any strong adjectives or metaphors bubbling to the surface of my mind to describe this book...

Nevertheless, I am quite pleased to have read it. The book provides a nice overview of the recent few years in Russia history and offers observations and explanations for the iceberg of which our American media only discusses the tip.
