I haven't personally ever even seen a playaway audio book.  But I do know that they are postable here.

Playaways: Yes

  • Playaways are like a preloaded mp3 player. They are small and have the book already loaded. You can't reload them with something else. They require batteries to play, and require headphones to listen to them. They come with headphones. They are in a case about the size of a VHS case although the unit itself is about the size of a mp3 player. They have an ISBN. They are considered audio books.
  • If you post a Playaway, you need to be sure that the listing makes the above information clear (you can copy-paste the above paragraph and add it to the book description information using the Edit Book Data feature linked under More Options on the Book Details page for the book), and you can also add "(Playaway)" to the title of the book using the Edit Book Data feature.
  • If you post a Playway, the headphones must be included. The batteries do not have to be included.

The above was copied from the Help Center's list of what can be posted here. You could try looking for the ISBN in the book browser and seeing if your book is WL.

They're very expensive. At least the ones I've looked at have been. I don't think I'd send one out here if had them. I'd probably put them on Ebay.

Also I don't think they should have to have the headphones. Most of the ones I get from the library don't even come with headphones. And who wants headphones that some stranger has put in their ears?

I really like them, they're very convenient to use.  My library has a few--I haven't acquired any yet myself, but I'll definitely look for them here!  (And I use my own earphones, thank you very much :)! )

I prefer CDS loaded onto my IPOD.

Can these things even go media mail if they have to come with the headphones?  Or do the headphones count as like a bookmark?

The USPS considers them a 'sound recording' eligible for media mail.

I load audio book cd's on my mp3 player, too, but playaways are ready-to-go, requiring no advance preparation or other equipment--not even a cd or tape player (just batteries & an earphone).  Loading cds on the mp3 requires some effort which can be frustrating or time-consuming to the even mildly technologically challenged :)  And there are still a few holdouts who don't even own an mp3 (gasp!).

I suspect, tho', that playaways won't be around for too long, although they do sound like a good idea in many ways.

I meant the headphones. Do the headphones make it not media mail?

Downloading CDS is so easy.  I just dowloaded 9 discs to ITunes and it only took about an hour. And that's only becuase I didn't babysit and swith the CDS as soon as they were done.  If I had been paying attention it would have taken a lot less time.

Just a heads-up for anyone POSTING the playaways  - I've been working on the listings and have submitted 240 listings (so far) that didn't show as audio's, so only required 1 credit.  Hopefully, they are finding time to work through these and get the Book Type corrected.

These are very expensive unless you are lucky enough to find some that a library is discontinuing....

I sent 2 Playaways out and the person receiving them said they only deducted one credit from their accoount for each o ne. They are sending me another credit for each when they get the Playaways. Also, thery are very light to send out.

Libraries do not include the headphones because they are a health issue. We get them in the pack and then remove them so patrons can use their own headphones.

Yes they should be counted as audios.

Larry D., let me know the ISBNs for those two listings so I can make sure they have been sent to the PBS Team for correction.

Send me a PM or post here..   Thanks

I've checked out several of these from our library and will not be doing that again.  In each case the audio was horrible, like listening to a very distant radio station.  And so I won't be ordering these from PBS either. Has anyone else had audio quality issues with these?

I've checked out several from my library, audio was fine.  They were pretty new, I wonder if age affects audio?
