In the last few weeks I have received several eagerly anticipated books only to discover that they are large print. This information never appeared anywhere in the book listing unless you went to the "edit book data" page and saw that the large print box was checked. Some large print books I can read but I found these so distracting that I could not read them and consequently have had to relist them without reading them (and they were both wishlist books that I waited for and have long wishlists!).

My plea to members is: If you are listing a large print book, and that information does not show up in your listing (i.e., after the title, it does not say "Large Print" ) please go and edit the title to reflect the fact that it is a large print book.

I contacted PBS about this issue and their instruction to me was that it is currently up to the members of PBS to help by editing the book data by adding LARGE PRINT to the title to solve this problem. So it IS up to us.

There are members who want large print books and there are members who don't. Make sure that the people who want them are the people who get them, and who knows, you could be next to receive a large print book that you unknowingly requested and do not want. You can't ask for your credit back if that is the case unless you have a requestor condition stating "No Large Print Books".

Getting off my soapbox now...

Did you go in and edit the book descriptions for these books?

PBS relies on us to help them clean up the database.  every now and then I'll go in and add information or clean up titles and descriptions.  Anyone can do this, it isn't limited to anyone other than who has the final approval for the changes

As Leslie stated, please edit the title description.  Add (Large Print) after the title.  I've fixed a few but there are so many, it's hard to get them all.

Thanks!

I'm having the opposite problem..I requested a large print book and received regular print. I PM'd the sender explaining the problem and asked for my credit back and no reply. Now I'm waiting for another LP that I requested from another person  which should have come by now. Maybe I'll check your bookshelf for the LP you're swapping!

Okay, I need to point out one thing.  I have submitted many edits on Large Print books and had much communication with Sherry (RoyalTech) who is the Book Data coordinator.  Large Print is one of the areas that is difficult to 'clean up.'

If you do an online search using the ISBN and find more than one or two matches that do not indicate Large Print then the Book Data folks here have to go with the assumpution that the ISBN is shared between Large Print and standard print which means that the standard print usually 'wins'.  But occaisionally (as Sally discovered) the book data that is pulled from online when the ISBN is orginally used here indicates LP and books get posted using that, they'll keep it.

But if, in looking at the edit page, the Large Print box is checked then please add "(Large Print)" to the title.  Because that box is going to remained checked unless a search provides absolutely no links to Large Print versions.

From the help doc "Solutions to Common Book Posting Problems"

Problem: you enter the ISBN on your book, and the listing that comes up does NOT say Large Print, but your book IS Large Print.

Explanation: This means that the publisher assigned the same ISBN to (at least) two different versions of the book.   At PBS, because each ISBN can be attached to only ONE version of a book, if you have the "other " version you need to enter it as if it does not have an ISBN.

Solution: Post this book with a customized listing for the book, using the Post Books without an ISBN link on the Post Books page, so that the Large Print status of your book is clear.

  • To make the book's Large Print status clear, you should
    • Put "(LARGE PRINT)" after the title on the Post a Book Without an ISBN page
    • Check the box for "Large Print" on that page

Problem: Title on the Listing Preview includes the words "Large Print" and your book is regular-font (NOT Large Print):

Explanation: This means that the publisher assigned the same ISBN to (at least) two different versions of the book.   At PBS, because each ISBN can be attached to only ONE version of a book, if you have the "other " version you need to enter it as if it does not have an ISBN.

Solution: Post this book with a customized listing for the book, using the Post Books without an ISBN link on the Post Books page, so that your book is not listed as Large Print if it is not Large Print.

If getting Large Print is a real issue for you, I would suggest you look into using an RC saying that you don't want Large Print books.
