Is it actually saying you pay the credit but don't have to pay a swap fee?

That's correct..... Books cost a Credit AND a Free Swap.

The Credit goes to the owner of the book.

The Free Swap is PBS's fee - members without a Free Swap they pay .49 cents

Limited Members are given 30 Free Swaps and Standard Members are given "Unlimited" Free Swaps to trade with.

OK I am a standard member. I have earned a boatload of free swaps but have never paid a free swap ALONG with a credit for a book. Are you saying that if I don't use PBS postage I'll also be charged a free swap IN ADDITION TO a credit?

So far it's been either or not both for each book....   at least on my account.

Marya, As a Standard Members Swap Fees don't mean anything to you. You have an "unlimited" amount of them. PBS doesn't show "infinity minus one" there's no reason to. How do you even show infinity minus one?

The Swap Fees you are showing are from use of Postage. Those can stay there while you use your unlimited ones. Then in the future if you decide to go to an A la Carte or Limited Membership, it's likely you can carry those over to your next membership and use them there.

Carol, I'm not raving about swap fees. I believe I never mentioned swap fees. What's making me crazy is the wording of the pop-up I mentioned in the subject line: "Request this book......for 1 credt AND a Free Swap"? This makes it sound as if each book requires not only a credit but also a free swap to be requested and that is not the case. Change the wording to "1 credit OR a Free Swap" and it makes a bit of sense.

Obviously I don't request many books apart from WL books and those are mostly on auto-request thus I have not encounter this strange phrasing before or if I have I was space-cadeting at the moment.

I'm still waiting for free swaps to have some value or meaning for the fully paid members.

A book has always been worth 1 credit so a swap fee isn't worth as much.

All requests require both a credit for a book and the swap fee for the transaction. If you are Standard you get as many swaps as you want a year. If you went with limited you get 30 free swaps, a la carte pay the fee per swap.

ETA: I just requested a book and didn't receive that message. Are you logged in when you try to request books?

No, that's not right at all - Books have always costed 1 credit. You can't get a book without a credit. (unless you get a deal in the bazaar)

The Free Swaps started last year on 2/15.  These are PBS's fees. So now they cost 1 Credit and 1 Free Swap.

This makes it sound as if each book requires not only a credit but also a free swap to be requested. Yes it does!

Because of printer issues, I've had my account on hold since mid-November and so have only ordered books via auto-request off my WL or more recently directly after reading about an author. In mid-November I had 80 free swaps. today I still have 80 free swaps, but in the meanwhile I have received 12 books with another yet en route. None of those books required a free swap, only 1 credit per book. The last book was the one with which I saw the "1 credit AND a Free Swap" window pop open and why I chose to start this thread.

I do understand that other levels of membership have different rules, that some require using free swaps and that the number of free swaps that can be used is limited to 30/year.

I still maintain that using the AND confuses the issue. Some members need to use a credit, others use a free swap. Unless I'm mistaken, and the confusing posts here prove anyone can be, I don't think anyone with required to surrender both for the same single book request.

A "Free Swap" can be used along with Book Credit(s) to make a book request.

It replaces the 49-cent Swap Fee.

Enrollment in Standard Annual Membership grants Unlimited "Free Swaps" for the year - meaning, Standard Members use only Book credits to request books, and do not ever pay Swap Fees for Book Requests.

Limited Annual Membership comes with 30 "Free Swaps" per year- meaning, Limited Members can make 30 requests for books per year using only Book Credits (and no swap fees).

"Free Swaps" are added to your account when

  • You enroll in Limited Annual Membership (that adds 30 Free Swaps/year)

  • You enroll in Standard Annual Membership (that makes your Free Swaps unlimited for the year)

  • You mail a shipment with Printable Postage. Please note that the "courtesy printing" (monthly for Standard Membership, quarterly for Limited Membership) does NOT grant a Free Swap, since there is no Postage Printing Fee associated with that mailing.

Requesting a book requires both 1 credit and 1 swap fee. For ALC members the swap fee is $.49. Limited members get 30 free swap fees for the year, after that it's $.49 each. Standard members have unlimited free swaps, and all 3 memberships earn free swaps for using printable postage, however (and I think this is the part that's causing you trouble) Standard members do not use their earned free swaps unless they downgrade to Limited or ALC at this time since the system charges the "free swap" from the Standard members unlimited supply rather than their earned ones. TPTB said that they might start some alternate way to spend the free swaps, but right now there is no way for a Standard member to spend their free swaps while still a Standard member.

I give up. The whole shebang has been explained in many ways and words ad infinitum, there's no need for further explanations.

Please  just ignore this thread.

Sorry its so confusing Marya. Every book you request  you are paying a credit and a free swap. You just don't see the swap fee activity because as a Standard Member there is no transaction log since you have unlimited swaps. Initially they had them being deducted in the log, but that freeked everyone out because it was just showing all negatives since they can't deposit "unlimited" swap fees so now not its not logged anywhere as we use them under the Standard Membership. In order to get a book, you do need both  a credit and a swap fee, the swap fee is just handled a little differently for each level of membership.
