I like this whole series, but this was one of my favorites. Mamur Zupt tries to figure out who has killed a man who worked for him. This takes him to the man's village, and also raises the question of whether it is realted to the war, or smuggling cotton, or the changing values (those drunken Australian soldiers!). In the meantime, we meet a very forceful young Egyptian woman, and Zeinib, also is coming to grips with many changes. I loved all the characters, and could not figure out who had killed the man or why. As always, there is the sly humor and the real problems that arise when there are many different cultures in one place.
