Although written by Paul Doherty, as Michael Clynes, the author of the "Brother Athelstan" series, this series has a very different style. Despite the killings, lusts and other mayhem, there is also bits of humor in this tale that very differentiates it from the squalidness of the Athelstan novels.

The story in this book doesn't start off like that, but somewhere in the middle it become more apparent and, as a result, more enjoyable. It got to the point where I had to put everything else aside to finish the book.
