Can you post/list a book you want that's not in system?

Is it a book you want or a book you have? If you have a book to post that's not in the system and it does not have an ISBN you have to use the 'post without an ISBN' option. If it's a book you want that no one has then you put it on your wishlist and wait in line for it to be posted. If it's a book no one else is wishing for, but not available for order, you will be first in line once it is posted.

If you are looking for something and it doesn't come up, but you know it's a real book and exists elsewhere, keep trying; the PBS database periodically syncs up with whatever sources it uses and your search should eventually allow the book to show up.

May I ask what book is it?

I don't have it, I want it.   It is not in the system as far as I can tell.  It's: "The Unreal People" by Martin Siegel also "Agent of Entropy" by same.

These are real books.  I have scans of the front covers and have researched the info from a literary database.  They are older and don't have ISBNs only publishers catalog id #s.

If you have an ISBN, search for it without dashes or spaces.  Then come back again in half an hour and search again.  This should trigger the computer to go looking.  Books listed on Amazon usually show up quickly.  Others may take repeated searching.

We can add books we have.  And search for ones that are out there, or upcoming releases.

As it is an older book, please try using advanced search with title and name.  This will bring up more options than the author page does.

It looks like you're looking for these particular editions, probably OOP (out of print), not possible reprints?  If they're listed somewhere else then PBS has the potential to have them listed as well so you should keep searching the PBS a few times, they might pop up. If they don't it's likely they're just too obscure and the publisher never did a reprint or got an ISBN and while you might wishlist them, they would never/rarely be posted anyway. Someone would have had  to post them without an ISBN; that always generates a unique listing number so even if there was a number showing they've been posted before, it's no guarantee they'll be posted again, or anytime soon. And wishing for a book with a unique non-ISBN is futile, as they are actually not supposed to be re-used.

I did see both of these at Amazon, not terribly expensive, so you might just have to resort to buying them there.

I believe these were only printed for years '69 & '72.  The author died soon after the second book.  The logical conclusion if I can't find them here is to buy them on ebay, abe, alibris, amazon, etc..  I just think that it is ashame that you can't post things you "want" and don't have.  I mean, only if it's something not in the system.

I know what you mean. I guess there's really no work around for this situation; without an ISBN the books won't officially have a listing and unless you have the books to post yourself, you can't honestly create a listing.  PBS is great for swapping books, but the majority of members actively swapping are posting and ordering from a pool of what are mainly popular books. Some less popular books do get posted, I've ordered a few myself, but it's not something that happens often. Unfortunately those two don't seem to have a big audience.

Yes, paperback swap is great!  I've found and ordered many a less popular book (I don't read too many mainstream books). That's what makes it all the more annoying when you finally do come across this situation. Oh well, it's never gonna be a perfect system, but it's fun to dream.

You can set up a search and save it.

Emily E., not sure what that means in terms of helping me get the books outside of buying them or encouraging the system to someday list them.

Can you explain?....the benefits?  I've tried searching for it several times and have checked again hours later.

Thanks

Dale, the only other options I can think of is to post a "looking for _______" thread in the book bazaar and to add a post to the "what are you looking for" thread also in the book bazaar forum.

There is an option to make a search and save it.  So you can check for title and author whenever you are here.  As it sounds like this book will have a temporary ISBN rather than a publisher assigned one.  So you can't wish list it.

Without an ISBN, searching to trigger it getting added will not help.  But you can make a saved search to look for it.

great responses - lots of good people here really "diggin' in" to help.  I might try the search and bazaar thing eventually, but i'm on an ordering binge right now, so I'll need to take a breather and reassess a little later.

Thanks bunches to all who replied !!!!
