As a Postmaster, I have opened and verified parcels to assure that they were Media Mail.  Some things I have found in parcels are:  Pair of boots, radio, ironing board.  There's more than that, but that's what I remember right off the top of my head.

It is nothing new.  ALL media mail can be opened and inspected.  I haven't seen it happen often, but it is always a possiblity.

some of the things I have found in "media mail": art supplies, crystal chandelier, clothes ( the customer tried to argue that those were allowed in media mail because they were "printed material") carpet samples, dishes

Media Mail is subject to inspection (although it rarely actually happens)...one of the reasons for the cheap rate.

I don't think it happens that often with PBS shipments because it's usually really obvious that they are books. But it can!

"Printed material"--that's hilarious!  I also like the ironing board--that would be one long book!

Too funny, what the PO has found when looking for mail fraud!

Media mail has always been "subject to inspection", but most locales very rarely do it unless they are known to have a big problem with fraud (like in Wisconsin).

that's why I always make sure the PBS logo is at the bottom of my label.....it helps to see that I think?

My postal inspector told me he had a lady who repeatedly was mailing jeans that she sold on Ebay. She got caught and was punished (I guess a fine or short jail time). Sad what folks will do to save $$$.
