a simple baby hat I do:
cast on 72 stitches
knit 2 rows
knit 2 purl 2 till the hat is about 6 inches
k 2 together, purl 2 together
k2 together, repeat until there is 6-9 stitches left
cut yarn leaving about 18 inches, slip onto a neelde ( a real one for sewing yaarns, not knitting! hehe), and slide through stitches on knitting needle, seam up sides, and viola, a cute little ribbed hat!
Depending on size of baby head you can cast on more or less stitches, in groups of four (68, 76, etc)
(this is a free pattern a local hospital uses for people to knit caps for the new arrivals)
There are a couple of yarn companies that I'm aware of that have lots of free patterns on their web sites. You have to register on the sites, but the patterns are free. They are: lionbrand.com (Lion Brand Yarn) and berroco.com (Berroco yarn). I made some of the baby things for my great-niece and nephew.
Congratulations! My first grandchild, also a girl, was born last year, and there is no comparable experience in life!
I have posted several baby patterns on my blog:
