I have a book that is newer but the front cover has the top layer of the picture torn off. Like if you had tape on a book and pulled it off, ripping off the paper with it. It's right in the middle of the front cover. Nothing else wrong with it just not sure if someone would appreciate having a faceless woman on the book.

IMHO that kind of damage would probably fall under the heading of a "torn" cover.  So if less than an inch is damaged it might be postable.

Of course, I could be wrong too, so you might want to check with your tour guide.

Here's the guidelines from the Help Center:

  • Must both be present (front and back)
    • note that a paperback missing its front cover is  usually an illegal, unsold copy
    • "cover" does not = dust jacket.  Hardcovers do not need to include their dust jackets to be swapped here.
  • Cover not water damaged (there may be no water damage to any part of the book)
  • Cover not torn or chewed/gnawed
    • some used book stores cut out a small part of the cover; if the amount missing is less than 1 inch, this is OKAY
    • a small rip (less than 1 inch) in the cover is OKAY
    • yes, that does say "chewed/gnawed" above.  That means no pet-chewed (or human-chewed) books.
  • A bookplate inside the cover or on the flyleaf is OKAY

My interpretation of the Help Center guidelines matches Bernhard's - if the torn area is less than an 1", it's postable.

I wouldn't risk sending it out-not worth the credit to me if there's a complaint. I'm voting for that falls under the tear/excessively worn rule.

I wouldn't risk sending it out either. I agree I think it would fall under the category of excessively worn, even if it is just the cover that is exessively worn.

Well I will review the book again and see if it's under a 1". I don't think it's smaller. it's a pretty significant loss. It doesnt go THROUGH the book, ya know just that top layer. I have quite a few unpostables so I might add that one to the list.
