I received some books today. 3 of the hardcovers are ex-library books. They have a big sticker on the front of the mylar cover. It says "Read and Return. Public Library" etc. I tried taking it off but it only peels off in little pieces. I just wanted to know if these books are still postable.

What wouldn't be postable about them? Ex-library books are postable, and the guidelines state that they can and will have stickers on them. It does not denote any stipulations on the stickers except that they not cover text, so there's no problem with them.

The Help Center, under GUIDELINES says:

  • Decirculated library books may have various markings and/or stamps inside or outside or on the page edges of the book; this is OKAY.  These may not obscure text.

Is my book OK to post here?

    Ex-library books:  Yes

    • Ex-library books often have stamps inside or on the binding: this is fine.   If you receive an ex-library book that is not clearly marked "withdrawn" (not all libraries do this), you should contact the library to ask them if this book is still part of their collection.

That is from the help docs.  I'm off to find out more about stickers on the cover.

So as long as they don't cover any of the inside text, they are ok? They're about 3 1/2 in by 2in and the 2 on the front do cover the title. The one book has the sticker on the back and it's stuck to the book cover because the mylar cover is ripped.

Yep, as long as they don't cover the text of the book. It's unfortunate that libraries don't consider that their books are often sold at FOL sales, and that they would still be nice shelf keepers if the library didn't crap all over them. Ah, but as long as it doesn't affect the reading, for me it's no biggie. I only have a very few keepers. The rest all get traded for something else to read! :)

Andrea, you can take those off with Goo Gone - especially if they're stuck on the mylar covers.  Just saturate the sticker & rub it in a bit then wait about 20mins, and they should peel or scrape right off using your fingernail or a plastic paint scraper.  It takes them off of book covers too as long as they have the shiny finish to them.  You want to be a little more careful and use less of the product, but it works quite well.

If you don't have Goo Gone, try vegetable oil or olive oil.  It's great for removing sticky stuff, as long as the cover is made of a material that won't absorb the oil.  You can put a little oil on a paper towel & rub it on the residue until it comes off.

I think I just like Goo Gone because of the smell..:P  I think most oils will remove adhesives.  Even mineral and petroleum based oils seem to work.  If you ever get super glue on your hands, Vaseline is the best stuff going.  It just flakes right off.

I used mineral oil once to get a giant Target sticker off a book cover. It worked well. I lightly dipped a qtip into the mineral water and it did a good job.

It's postable and ok to send as long as the person doesn't have a "no-ex library books" condition. If a request comes in with that, then just hit decline. You'll keep your place in line for the book orders and the request will be passed on to someone else.

Thanks everyone! I'll try getting one of the stickers off and if that doesn't work, I'll just PM the requester and it can be up to them whether they want it or not :)
