I recently received a paperback that I requested.  The back cover has the upper corner torn completely off.  The area of missing cover is less than a square inch.  According to the book condition rules of PBS, a small rip less than 1inch is acceptable but they don't specify if a corner being torn off is or not.  I would not be comfortable reposting this book, so I won't but should I ask for my credit back?  Looking for opinions, Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's postable and would fall under this section:

  • some used book stores cut out a small part of the cover; if the amount missing is less than 1 square inch, this is OKAY

Thanks whippoorwill for replying, I forgot to add that to my initial post.  I did see that a piece of corner CUT off less than one square inch was okay, but this is not cut, it's torn and there is no other indication that the book came from a used book store which in my experience generally stamp their merchandise with their name.

Still, I would assume that it's ok and postable. Corners can rip off from wear and tear, and as long as it's less than an inch, IMO, it would fall within the guidelines. Of course, it's entirely up to you whether or not you want to repost it. I generally have a higher standard with books I post, and would likely not post it. But, if I received it, I would not mark it RWAP or ask for my credit back.

The three used bookstores I have been to in my area (one of which I use frequently) don't stamp their merchandise. They also don't cut off corners though. So I wouldn't assume no stamp means it's not one that came from a UBS.

The amount missing is less than a square which would make it postable IMO. if the part missing in less than a square inch then that would usually mean that the torn edge is less than an inch, which would also still be postable postable in my opinion.

I guess my priorities are all mixed up. I don't worry about the spine or the cover, but the reading in between the covers. If I want to read a book , I don't much care how it looks. I have a few first editions and old books that came with notes and dedications in the front and discolored pages because of newspaper clippings and the like tucked in. I love them even more for their tear stains and life lines.

As long as swapped books meet PBS posting guidelines and membership conditions Fara, which is our membership duty to ourselves and all other site members.   Denise/teddybear is merely attempting to minimize the chance of receiving a RWAP or black mark on her account for sending a book that doesn't meet minimum PBS rules.
