OMG, that poor book. I can't think of any specific rule it breaks, but IMO it certainly doesn't pass the "in good condition" test. Let me go look for something because in my opinion that book should never have been posted.

eta: I can't find anything specific, but if it were me I would probably mark it RWAP- damaged by sender and send them something along the lines of:

Thank you for the book. Unfortunately with the bent and damaged cover and all the permanently bent pages, I do not believe the book was in a condition that meets the site's posting requirements. In the Help Center under Postability it states "Book Condition Criteria for 'Swappability' at PBS:  When you Post a book, you are asked to confirm that the book is "in good condition, and not excessively worn".  It is impossible to list all of the ways in which a book might be considered excessively worn, but the criteria below are as comprehensive as we have been able to make them." This book is in extremely poor condition and should not have been posted.

It might not get you anywhere credit-wise, but at least it would get it on that person's record that they are sending nasty books. Books don't need to be in such good condition that they qualify for library shelves IMO, but the should not look like they've been run over by a truck either.

I agree with Melanie - there is no way that I would have sent that book to anyone.  It is in terrible condition and would be very unpleasant to try to read.  I would ask for my credit back.  Sometimes the sended will give you your credit without much of a fight.

It looks to me like it was possibly bent by someone (mail carrier?) trying to jam it in a mailbox that was not wide enough for it.  My first thought was it appears more to be RWAP--damaged by USPS.

Well ... I think that that damage could have happened in the mail. I received a hardcover book a few months back where the spine was bent into a U shape ... like someone took the book in an upright postion (like it would be, on a shelf) ... and then stepped on it, bending the spine causing the spine to form a sideways U.

I believe that the sender didn't send it that way ... and the packaging wasn't ripped ... and yet, there was the damage.

I'm not going to send out that particular book FIFO ... but on the other hand, I didn't mark it RWAP either. It didn't break any rules that I could tell ... all the pages were firmly attached to the bent spine, and in no danger whatsoever of coming loose. The spine itself wasn't cracked into pieces, just bent ... a lot.

If the OP's book was paperback, a bent cover and bent pages are 100% postable. I have to say ... although many would choose not to send it out ... I think it is postable.

Am I wrong on thinking that?

Nope. Your book condition falls into a gray area. Your sender may very well refund the credit. I wouldn't get too upset if you don't get the credit back, though, as the sender may see it differently.

Ok, ya'll must be looking at some picture that I can't see because the one I do see does not appear unpostable or one that should be marked RWAP.  I've looked at the one picture I can see repeatedly....

That is really great that the sender worked with you.

I sent in Feedback to the Team asking if they could add something to the postability guidelines about squished hard covers with a link to this thread. I really believe that a book in that bad of condition does not belong on this site and there should be something in the rules that a receiver can point to instead of just arguing the objective "not in good condition".  A book with small tears on the text pages is better that than thing and they aren't allowed.
