They aren't kidding about raising prices every May, isn't this the third price hike in 3 years?

First ounce of First Class is going up a penny; no increase in add'l ounces. The new media mail rate for 1# and under will be $2.23 - looks like even more books will be able to go FC cheaper than Media. I wonder if that's part of the plan?

The whole list of new postage rates is available at this http://pe.usps.com/2008_RateCase/Notice123/Notice123.pdf

The new media rates in a list you can print off are here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/mpmarus/2259191174/

Well, UPS charges a fuel surcharge now, so fuel costs may well be a consideration. I pulled these facts from the USPS.com website:

  • We operate the largest civilian vehicle fleet in the world with more than 216,000 vehicles driving more than 1.2 billion miles each year and using nearly 121 million gallons of fuel.
  • When fuel costs increase one penny, our costs increase $8 million.

The LLVs we use in our office for delivery hold 13 gallons of gas and I have to fill up twice a week. My last fill-up on Saturday cost $30.00 for a little over 11 gallons.

Just FYI!

Yea Mark, and we have until May 12 to stock up on those forever stamps!

Connie, do you know if they count in multiples once the rates change? For example, now I use 5 of them on a pkg for $2.05 and then add another 8 cents postage; when the rates change will I be able to use 5 for $2.10 and add 13 cents or will it be calculated as $2.05 so I'll need to add 18 cents?

With the rate change, they'll be 42 cents so 5 would be $2.10 and you'd only need to add 13 cents more, Mary!

Thank you! I usually use Paypal postage but may have to invest in a couple of sheets of "forever" stamps for "just in case" LOL

In about 200 years stamps have went up 40 cents.  Can you think of any other item that has only went up 40 cents.  yes they are going to raise rates every May now but  most things change prices several times a year.  You can't drive your mail to its destination for 42 cents.  Nowadays, I'm not sure you can back out of your driveway for that!

Mary, I've been to the PO twice this week and have gotten a total of 5 books of forever stamps so far.  I hate to spend so much in stamps right now but I might buy a few more to stock up on my PBS and SwapaDVD mailings.
