I enjoyed this introduction to the sometime wacky citizens of Pine Cove and their encounters with Catch the demon. Moore's description of the attempts to attract tourists (and the resentment of the same) was especially funny to me. I also liked the interactions of the characters such as between Travis and Catch and between Augustus Brine and the djinn Gian Hen Giann.

I was hoping to like this a lot more than I did, which is not to say it isn't a fun read. Honestly, I was expecting more, given all the hype and rave reviews. It was funny, it was well plotted, but I wasn't nearly as enthusiastic as I had expected.

After reading *A Dirty Job* by Chris Moore, I was looking forward to reading more of his writing. Going back to his early books and "starting at the beginning" is NOT the way to go on this one.
It's not that the book was BAD, it was just a huge yawn. I finally stopped reading at a little past the halfway point, when I realized that I could put it down after a couple of pages and not be all that anxious to get back to the book to see what happens next. I just plain didn't care.
Don't discount Chris Moore's writing based on this book. Start with one of his later efforts (A Dirty Job, Lamb) and enjoy your reading.

I usually try to choose a 100th book for the year that means something, but this year, I wanted something light and funny. Christopher Moore it was! Of course, it could be said I have so many demons of my own these days that I'm looking for a way to "keep them" *laugh*. Okay, maybe not, but this was still a very good book. One of his best and kept me laughing. An easy read for when you need something not too deep!

A fun, frivolous read. I expected to laugh more because I read another book by Moore, Biff, Jesus's Boyhood Friend,and laughed my tail off. This one was just ok so I give it 3 stars.

When I began this book I thought maybe I had picked up a child's book by mistake--Moore's writing was juvenile and not too sophisticated, but soon I forgot about the writing style and was absorbed into the story. This novel melds fantasy, mythology, and humor into one big ball of fun once you finally get into the meat of the story. Good, fun, fast read.

Squishy English food, Djinns, Demons, drunks..what more could you want on a lovely Summer night in California? A funny book with a sarcastic, people eating Demon, the King of the Djiins who can swear a blue streak( literally!!) and a town full of dysfunctional folk. A thoroughly wonderful read.

I'm rereading this on audio because I desperately needed a laugh but even this book isn't doing it. Might it be because I've already heard all of the punchlines and I need more snark? I don't know. It's mildly entertaining but has some dull moments and too many long moments of explanation and I find myself drifting away all too often.

This is a quirky book about a young priest-in-training who unwittingly commands a demon into existence that gives him immortality but follows him around eating folks for, well, forever unless he can find a way to send the demon back to hell. It is super snarky and I enjoyed every page. Moore has a very twisted sense of humor.

I am a big Christopher Moore fan and re-read his later books on a regular basis. This was his debut novel and while it's entertaining, I didn't like it as much as other books (Bloodsucking Fiends and Lamb are my favorites)

A very funny read... definitely will try another Chris Moore book.
I had read "Lamb" by the same author and while this wasn't quite the laugh riot that that one was, it was still funny, engaging, and amusing. A quick read. The characters are so well-described that you can see them all in your mind, and their dialogue and interactions will have you chuckling. The story follows Travis, a 90-year old former seminary student in a 20-year old body, who has spent the last 70 years traveling cross-country with a demon. Well and good, except for the demon's nasty tendency to eat people. When the pair arrives in Pine Cove, Travis thinks he has figured out how to send Catch (the demon) back to hell. If only it were that simple! With the help of a grizzled old fisherman, a waitress, a drunk, an fussy man who wishes he was British, an elderly couple, and a 2,000 year-old midget Arabian genie, they just might get it done; as long as the sexy but clueless witch and the cops stay out of the way!
A great escape to another world...Moore always does a great job of creating lifelike characters who you might correlate with someone you know; with the exception of the mystical demon. I always find his books quite entertaining.
After reading several newer stories, I decided to go back to the beginning.

Funny Funny Funny!
I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could!! It was laugh out loud funny, my first time reading a Christopher Moore book. He has a wild imagination, an awesome sense of humor, I will read everything he's written!!

I read LAMB and Fluke first (both of which were AMAZING) but this one was a huge dissapointment! It was really short & boring. Hardly even funny.

I actually had to force myself to finish this book. While Moore's sense of humor is still apparent, I couldn't have cared less about most of the characters, and at points the plot really dragged. If I were to recommend a book by Moore, this wouldn't be it; my favorite is still "A Dirty Job."
