I love John Sandford. I have read some of his stand alones but now I have decided to start reading his Prey series. I have the first book and some of the other books. Does this series need to be read in order or can I skip around?

The series does take place in chronological order - with some events "building" off previous ones -  and Sandford himself in response to F.A.Q.'s has said he thinks they should be read in order. I happen to agree, but then I think I am genetically incapable of reading a series out of order. ;-)

I agree with Bookmonkey (though that seems to be a theme lately).   :)

I love this series and I think that the evolution of Lucas' personal relationships make it important to read them in order.

Yup!   I've read all of them up to and including Phantom Prey and I agree with BookMonkey and Dogdoc.  The character building is one of the most charming parts of the series.

Ivy - you can also go to the author's website *johnsanford.org* and he lists all the books he's written, including others besides the Prey series.  His books, especially the older ones are widely available here at PBS, at used book stores and even my library, that notoriously has a lousy selection, carries some of them.

I'm just finishing book 2 Shadow Prey and will start the next one tonight.  Right now, Lucas is a new dad and I'm looking forward to getting futher into the series and seeing the character development.

I love the Prey series and I'm madly in love with Lucus :o).

But when I read the first book or 2 I did not like the character at all. I thought he was too much of a dog. But he does mature and I begin to understand and love him. So it's best to read them in order.

One thing I don't understand is why Sandford never got into Lucus's past too much.

Lucas is one of my favorite characters.

I actually have 16 of this series not posted on my shelf. Two are hard backs, and all are in postable condition. I am about 99% certain the ones I don't have are the most recent ones. If anybody is interested, PM me and maybe we can work something out.

With over 350 books on my TBR pile I am not in a hurry at this point to collect the whole series...I will be on the look out for them as I go along...I figure if I get one every now and then that I will be able to get them all by the time I am ready to read them.  Great offer though...

I finally have all the books on my TBR pile except Invisible Prey. It is one of the "newer" ones and will have to wait until I get some more credits because I have had alot of wishlisted books come through lately.

I really liked Rules of Prey but didn't care for Shadow Prey at all.  I'm hoping I like Eyes of Prey better.  It's interesting because in the forward of Shadow, Sanford says the story that was published was not the original story he wrote.  His editor didn't think it was "thriller" enough so he started over and just wrote another story.  Maybe I would've liked the original better.

Hidden Prey and Broken Prey and also The Hanged Man's Song(not a Prey Series)by Sandford, but that is all I have left. If interested PM me.

I am currently having a deal 2 for 1 on HBs & 3 for 1 on Paperbacks till October 31....... Make sure if interested whether paperback or HB's. Anyone, interested PM me. But make sure to double check on paperback or HBs, can't mix. And HB double thick book, would still go for 1 for 1, because of postage cost.

I love this series Lucas has been great I've looked forward to reading them all.  That said, I just finished reading the last 2 Invisible and Phantom Prey.   Maybe my  anticipation got the best of me,  I was very disappointed he  just didn't seem to have 'it' this time.  I'm kinda crushed.     Shawna D

I also love this series and am currently reading Invisible Play.  I also agree that these need to be read in order.  But then again I am a stickler and HAVE to read the books in order no matter what the series, just in case they play off one another.
