Dear Friend, — You were right: desperation is a dangerous state of mind. It was desperation that drove me to London to salvage my family's reputation and finances in the first place. And it is desperation -- and perhaps a little desire -- that has gotten me into the situation I find myself in now. — You see, I've become ensnared in the inv...  more »

Just finished reading âPride and Petticoats' by Shana Galen. At first I had my doubts about this book. A hero who is a fop named Freddie? Not what I call a winning combination. But when the hero is a spy masquerading as a fop, well, that's another story. He is still named Freddie, but I guess that can't be helpedâ¦and it kind of grows on you after awhile.

Shana has a true ability to write comedy, love, suspense, danger, more comedy and hilarity into her novels as well as writing convincing and likeable characters. This book deals with two alphas causing more than a few sparks to fly. It's like the Revolution is being fought all over again.

Our heroine, Charlotte Burton is an American from Charleston, SC who has fallen on hard times. Her father died after gambling away his share of the family shipping business. Her older brother dies while trying to run English blockades off the American Coast during the War of 1812. It is Charlotte's plan to sail to England to find Cade Pettigru, a family friend in hopes of borrowing money from him to redeem the family business. But, it seems that Cade is a known American spy and is wanted by the English Government. Enter foppish Lord Dewhurst, Freddie to his friends, who is the aforementioned spy looking to capture Pettigru. Discovering Charlotte in the company of Pettigru (who escapes before being captured), Freddie decides to strike a bargain with Charlotte. He offers her the money she needs in exchange for her posing as his wife in order to flush Pettigru out of hiding. Charlotte agrees and the fun begins. I think my favorite part of the story was the dinner scene. It is priceless.

In all, I enjoyed this story. I should never doubt Shana Galen's ability to produce a fun and entertaining story. If you haven't read her work, I suggest starting with âWhen Dashing Met Danger' then continue with this one. Both books are stand-alones, but we meet characters in P&P that we met in WDMD. Both are great fun and great reads. I gave Pride and Petticoats 4 stars.

Great story. Loved both hero & heroine. The war in the Colonies was still being fought with them & it leads to a lot of laughs & romance.
