Perhaps I am doing something wrong, as this has happened a few times now...

I use printable postage and DC on all of my books. I weigh all of my books on a food scale after wrapping them so that I can be sure the packaged weight is accurate.

Last night I mailed a wrapped book that was 8.0 oz. I thought the postage would print out as First Class since the book was less than 13 oz but it printed out as media mail and charged the 2.13 media mail base price (minus the DC fees).  I have only had one printable postage come up as First Class, while everything else under 13 oz has come up as media mail.

Is there something that I am missing here? I would prefer that these lighter books travel First Class for the cheaper rate and the faster delivery.  If it makes any difference, I don't take my books to the PO anymore, I just stick them in my mailbox on my way out in the morning.

Thanks for any advice. :)

Only books under 7 oz will be cheaper by FC so anything over that will print MM. The 13 oz thing doesn't have to do with a change in prices, just an arbitrary weight they selected for handing over vs dropping in a box.

Ah. That makes sense.  Thanks!

You can look up the postal rate for 1st class up on the USPS website and add a stamp to make up the difference. Just cover or cut out the part that says media mail.  I did that once when I forgot to add the weight for an extra book although I kept the media mail.  I needed the stamp to adjust the postage for the increased weight.

The printed postage will only use 1st class if it's cheaper or 2.15 1st class as opposed to 2.13 MM.
