Their books are still part of the FIFO and can be ordered that way. There are probably a slew of different reasons why people choose to do this. One reason I have heard is so that people can't post books to their wishlists just to get their home address, which has happened in the past. I believe profiles can also be viewed by people who are not members, so that is another reason someone might have theirs private.

A few people are just firmly of the belief that FIFO is the only way trading should happen--and I give them credit for putting their shelf where their opinions are.

I know of one member who has left an abusive situation and has security concerns.  The only way to see her books is by the order more feature after FIFO.  She has a second layer of security as the books go to a PO box.

Some people have  lots of friends, family, and  Real Life acquaintances as members here.  They might have books and interests that they don't want others to know about or are embarrassed to have known.

I know there are some who keep their WL private because they like erotic books and are embarassed by that.

But I can't imagine that erotica would stay on your bookshelf long enough to need to make it private.  Your WL, yes.  But it seems to whip off my shelves.   Rarely even spends the night.

A great majority of books are traded via FIFO, so you don't really have to be able to "see" what any given individual has on their shelf. It comes in handy for those who like to "order more from member," but otherwise not a big deal.

Emily, how sad that erotica won't even spend the night with you! Where's the fun in that? ;)

Some people are die-hard FIFO followers and don't believe anyone should be able to order an extra book from someone or order directly from someone.  But hey if they can afford the postage then it's ok with me-just helps to increase my chances of getting a bulk order from someone. I don't have an unlimited postage budget.
