I made this recipe last night http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/rachael-ray/pumpkin-and-black-bean-soup-recipe/index.html , its from Rachael Ray and is for "Pumpkin and Black Bean" soup. I had to make the curry powder from scratch, and I don't think for my tastes homemade is as good as storebought (I know every true indian chef says to the contrary, so lets blame my western taste buds for that). Anyhow, I doubled the black beans, and added parsley instead of chives.

Not bad, and very cozy. anyone else try pumpkin soup from scratch? Some others called for sausage. I also make a black bean and chorzio soup and add pumpkin to thayt- the chorizo absorbs the flavor of the pumpkin, so it just makes it thicker and more healthy for hubby. :-)

Pumpkin soup is almost a national dish during the winter in Australia.  I make it frequently after a 3 year stint there.  Yes, is does get cold some places Down Under.  One could find canned pumpkin rarely there, but fresh pumpkin all year in the grocery.  Convenience was peeled pumpkin pieces in the freezer section like a bag of peas!
