Hi everyone!

I had a question about cancelled  transactions.  Whenever there is a request that I can not fulfill because of requestor condtions I always explain the reason in the box provided.  Does the person who asked for the book receive this answer?  I wondered because I just had a transaction cancelled by the sender, but there is no explanation as to why.  Do I assume it had to do with my requestor conditions?  The only one I have is that I prefer books from a non-smoking home.   It's not a huge deal since I feel I will be offered the book again soon, but I just wanted to know if it's required to give an explanation for why a book can not be sent.  Thanks everyone in advance!

Well I just found out the reason why the sender can't mail the book.  I got an email that said the book is no longer available.  Must say this is rather annoying.   Why was the book listed on their shelf then?

If you cancel before accepting the request, and the request is not passed along then the requestor does see your message. If the request is passed along, then the requestor doesn't get any notification at all.

If you cancel after accepting the request, then there's no place to enter notes. You can see if this happened by looking at the Request Details from your Transaction Archive.

I can tell you I had a book posted and had someone request it.  I was all set to mail it when a glass of water got knocked over.  I sure wasn't going to send a water damaged book to anyone.  So, your sender might have discovered something wrong with the book and cancelled because of that.

I also have a smoking RC and get turned down quite a bit.  Sigh.  Many times with no explanation at all.  Someone told me you're supposed to tell the person why you're not sending the book to them.  That's so if your RC is the stop you can take it off if you really want the book.  Never happened for me.

If they didn't fill out a reason than the "Books Is No Longer Available" is the generic message from PBS. Also I think if hthere are other copies in the system it doesn't send a message it just keeps reordering the book for you until someone accepts your RCs or it runs out of members to offer the request.

Thanks everyone! Guess I will just wait and see if someone else posts the book!

I always fill in the reason I'm turning down a RC request (or at a minimum, that I'm uncomfortable with it), and have several times received a PM regarding the person changing the RC and/or turning it off in order to receive the book, so I was unaware that sometimes people don't see your reason.  That's  good to know. I post some "odd" books, so maybe mine is the only copy in the system of those I've heard back from.

A denied RC requires an explanation, a cancelled transaction does not, if fact I don't think you are given an option anymore, it just goes away. You can tell the difference because an RC turndown will not show up in your TA, but a cancelation will and the emails indicate if it is an RC turndown in parens.

I can't say what the person you requested from did, but I have had to cancel a few for that same reason. I have around 3000 books in my house. The last deal I ran I sent out over 400 books in a very short time. I try to keep my shelf up to date, but sometimes a book gets included as a freebie and doesn't get deleted from my shelf.  It will take a pretty long time to go book-by-book on my PBS shelf comparing to my physical shelves to catch the missing ones so I have to just turn down requests when they happen to hit a book I don't have. It happens.
