Hello all!  This is my first day here and I've already mailed out one book and have a request for a second!  I can tell I'll have a lot of fun here.

I just got a request for one of my posted books, and the member's conditions state, "- I'll only accept books that HAVE NOT been round cats. No cat-urine smell!!!!!"

I do have cats, but the litter box is in the basement and the book is relatively new and has never been anywhere near anything smelling remotely of cat urine.  So, the book has technically been "around" cats- but certainly doesn't have a cat urine smell.  Should I deny the request?

Thank you!

My theory is if you have any doubts, turn it down.  And I do have a RC.   Just put that you have cats as the reason.  There are folks who have cat hair or dander issues.

It sounds like this might be one of the cases where a member is venting about a past problem in their RC, rather than trying to avoid cat hair.  But it is their responsibility to make that very clear.

(And I don't think a RC is the right place to vent.)

And welcome!

I agree with Emily. Just state that you have cats and that you hope someone else can fill their request soon.

I'll only accept books that HAVE NOT been round cats. This says you could not accept. Unless you took it literally in which case I don't think any of your books were round cats. My cats are round; they have been around my books; but none of my books have been round cats.

I'll only accept books that HAVE NOT been round cats.

So this would then mean that if those book have been SQUARE cats, then they're good to go!

Or you could PM them and tell them that the book has been around cats, but not cat litter or cat urine.

Personally I really like it when someone PM's me instead of automatically denying my request because of my RC.  Mine says that I am allergic and don't want books that smell of cigarette smoke, perfume or harsh chemicals.  I had someone PM me that she couldn't guarantee that the book wasn't around cigarette smoke because she bought it at a FOL sale.  She said it didn't smell to her.  I gave her permission to send the book.  If it ended up in reeking of cigarettes, I would take the hit because I had given her permission.

I have also modified my RC to ask that people PM me before denying the request to see if I'll accept the book, especially if the book is a Wish List book.

Is it possbile to PM without accepting?

ETA: I ask this because I received a request with an RC and the person said that I had to accept before PMing them. When the book didn't meet their extra questions they asked in the PM (whicj I didn't know about or I would have just declined), I lost my spot because she wouldn't cancel.

That's the problem with RCs that ask the sender to PM before declining -- in order to PM, the sender has to accept the request and then if the book isn't acceptable, either the sender or requestor has to cancel and whoever cancels loses his/her spot.

ETA: Welcome, Leigh!

It is not possible to PM without accepting unless they include their screen name or a link.

Anyone who asks me to PM without that, gets turned down.   That really pushes my buttons.  They are asking for a favor and at the same time making it harder?  Oh yea.  That's polite.  Grrr.

If it is not a WL book, then they do have the option to request the book again with the RC turned off.

Well darn and double darn.  I gues I'll take the request to PM out of my RC.

At least I have the opportunity to turn off the RC with wish list books.  Maybe they can give the same opportunity with regular books.

I believe it is possible to include a link to PM you.  I know you can leave your screen name, or your name and town so folks can find you in the Member Directory.  Be sure to have the directory listing your name or screen name selected under the privacy settings.

I tend to agree with those that argue that pm'ing just adds too much hassle. (Because if they don't respond in time, you have to make a decision on your own, which is a drag.)  Of course if you really want the credit, it might be worth it to you.

In this case, I would turn it down and specify in the reason that though your book has no urine smell, since it have cats you felt you had to turn it down. Perhaps they would be inspired to change their RC to make it a little clearer.

You have cats they don't want books around cats-decline.  Doesn't matter if the books aren't around the cats.

I have a cat so I just decline everything that says "cats" in it.

My cats aren't around my books, either, but if someone takes the time to make an RC about cats, I figure they know what they want so I just always decline it.

You can turn you RC on and off whenever you like from your settings page.

Maybe they can give the same opportunity with regular books. - Kate you can turn your RC off when you are making the request with available books. Right under the Process My Order button there is a check box for DO NOT apply my requester conditions.
