I'm waiting for a book that the "details" popup says was mailed 8/28, but there is nothing about the DC info.  How long should it take?

If the book was mailed with PBS DC, you will see large green check mark in shipping information box.

When using the 'details' button, DC typically appears as the first entry noting 'Electronic Shipping Info Received'.  Which merely means the DC service has been purchased and a number assigned, this entry does not reflect actual mailing status.

'Acceptance' or 'Enroute' entries denote that the book is in the possession of USPS, and has been scanned.  Note that USPS only scans at the counter if you purchase postage, or a few points enroute.  It is possible for PBS members to mail at a blue box and not have the book scanned until delivery.

If the book you are waiting for does not have the above information Nora, either it hasn't been mailed yet or shipped without PBS DC.

ETA - USPS data frequently downloads around midnight, and is available to PBS after that time.

<<If the book you are waiting for does not have the above information Nora, either it hasn't been mailed yet or shipped without PBS DC.>>

This is a bit misleading; I notice sometimes books sit at my local post office for a week or more without getting scanned, even though they have been mailed and I always use PBS DC. Media mail is at the bottom of the postal service's priority list, so sometimes it sits, lonely and unscanned, until there's room on a truck, etc.

Cheers,

Catt

From the Help Center:

PBS has to wait for the USPS to scan the barcode, and then transmit the data.

  • "Electronic Shipping Info received" does not indicate a barcode scan
    • it means that you printed the wrapper, generating the barcode.
  • Even though you may have watched the PO clerk scan your barcodes, that doesn't mean that USPS transmitted the data to PBS right then.
    • The data has to go to their central computer first, and then to PBS. The delay involved is variable; our system has no choice but to wait to hear from theirs.

Scanning is getting so it's done much less frequently than in the past.  Sometimes, one I send out won't be scanned ever...I just get a thank you from the requester.  It's a bummer.

So true Elizabeth, that's why the note above your quote...that only postage purchased at the counter is scanned immediately.  Blue box DC's are scanned enroute, and occassionally not at all prior to delivery :-)  Rumor says (don't 'cha love that term) USPS is cracking down on unnecessary scans, so blue box or passed-over-the-counter complimentary scans are being discouraged in many areas.

I'm waiting on a book that says it was mailed with DC.  But so far it only has the 'information received' notation.  I've learned that a lack of follow up entries doesn't necessarily mean the book isn't in the mail...hope it's on the way tho, been wishlisted for quite awhile :-)

ETA - PS Elizabeth, and I probably wasn't clear...but the information I was referring to in your quote was the big green check mark that appears when DC has been purchased.  Otherwise a book may be in the mail, but PBS DC wasn't purchased.

I have gone to the USPS  tracking website and have had scans updated before PBS.  Just another place to try.
