Its been a while since I've used PBS postage. My question is, will I be able to just stick the package (1 book) in my mailbox to send off or will I still have to bring it to the post office??

Yes, you can put it in your mailbox, assuming your carrier will pick up (some don't, as they are walking a long route on foot or for various other reasons, it's to their discretion). The rule regarding handing packages over 13 ounces directly to someone or the PO  is based on using stamps. Printable postage is traceable so it's allowed to be dropped into a box.
