Hey. Got a quick question here.  I'm fairly new to PBS so take it easy on me!  Hehe.  I want to put a RC on my books that will only apply to certain books. Specifically I want to state that I do want the book jacket (in good shape), but only pertaining to a certain author's books. Since the majority of books I'm ordering won't be that particular author's hard covers is it going to annoy the heck out of people to have to click through that RC? I'm basically wanting to avoid making people mad, but I don't want to get any of these particular books without the jacket. ?????? :(  I don't know what to do.  I get the impression that RC's make some people mad.

I don't have a problem with RC's and your credit is worth what you get, so I think you should ask. It's better than making the sender PM you before you send it---which I got one today that said that-- sometimes it takes days for them to message you back and such! I say go for it. Just make a small list, it doesn't take a huge effort for them to go through it, and it could save them some trouble down the line... and really make your credit worth it!

I think if I were in your position, I would turn the RC "on" only when I order book by that particular author.

From what I've read in these forums, some folks misunderstand "complex" RC's (by 'complex' I mean RC's that are specific to a particular book or author) and assume the RC's apply to everything that person orders.  Even some people who have "hard cover dust jacket" RC's get their paperback orders rejected.  Go figure!

i am collecting hardcover books by one author.  i only turn on my RC when requesting a book by that particular author.  i've found it's the easiest thing for me to do.

Good alternatives given to you here. I especially like Julie and Jeri's.

Based on recommendation here, I have included my nickname so senders can PM me first if they need to do so.

OTOH, I wonder if your PM about the DJ yesterday came from someone called Dave? I had a problem with him chronicled here http://www.paperbackswap.com/forum/topic.php?t=129809

It is not your obligation to PM someone id a book doesn't have a DJ.

Pet peeve of mine: Asking me to PM you about your conditions when the helps clearly states:

  • Your Requestor Conditions should NOT ask the sender to "PM me if you are unsure"
    • There is no mechanism for the sender to PM the requestor from a request without accepting it

I don't think RC's bother users as much as you might think. I would do what the PPs have suggested, except putting a link to your username in the RC so that the sender can contact you without first accepting your request, as this is against the rules.

Please do use RC's!  I am new, and I've already run into issues with people who don't want to bother with one, but also want to put conditions on postable books.  Kind of a pain.  I don't mind the RC's at all.  I've seen them on a couple of textbooks I've shipped (regarding highlighting and underlining) and one for allergies.  It only takes a few seconds to read it and decide how well the books fits.

except putting a link to your username in the RC so that the sender can contact you without first accepting your request, as this is against the rules. ???? This is NOT against the rules, in fact it is in the rules to do exactly that if you have an RC that might cause questions. It is highly discouraged to ask for a PM in RCs, but if you do it is suggested that you include your contact information (PBS nickname) so that they may contact you prior to accepting the request.

I suggest that, if it is your only RC, then only turn it on for orders it applies to. You will get confused people or people who just don't like RCs turning you down.

Maybe against the rules was a bit of an exaggeration, but it does state, as Cozette mentioned:

Your Requestor Conditions should NOT ask the sender to "PM me if you are unsure"

Also, it does not say to put a link in your RC to your username, it says this:

  • If you want the sender to communicate with you about the book, you should phrase this "If you are unsure whether or not your book meets these conditions, please ACCEPT this request and then send me a Personal Message about the book."

this is how i have my RC worded

Please, due to allergies I cannot receive books that are currently in a smoking home (you don't have to know the history...if no one smokes in your house then yes, I want the book)

Harry potter series, left behind series, and Brisinger hardbacks must have dustjackets. This only applies to the mentioned books, no others are required to have them.

and because the hardbacks i want are all on my wl, i keep that part on my RC all the time. once i have completed my series i will take that part out

Ok, thanks you guys!  I didn't know you could turn the RC on and off (without having to retype it everytime) so I decided to do that.  Here's what I put (roughly cause I'm too lazy to copy and paste)

"This applies ONLY to James Patterson's HARDCOVER books.  I only want books with the book jacket still on them and I want the jacket in good condition (no tears or water damage). Worn around the edges is fine. If in doubt, I will not mind if you cancel the order. :) Thanks!"

    That sound ok???
