I'd rather ask this here than at Questions About PaperbackSwap.

Because I've not been able to find a few books this year, I'm starting to set up tags for the boxes or bookcases my books are in. My question is: will the tag for a book still show when it's requested from me? or does it disappear at that point?

I don't want to go through all this extra work if a key 'locator' tag disappears when I need it most.

A tag stays on a book until you remove it-or someone reports it as inappropriate.  An inapropriate tag would be something like "water damaged" or "unpostable" w/o some sort of personalization added to it like "Gail-unpostable".

Tagging books "Box 1 basement" or something should be fine.  It might be hard to see if the book has a lot of tags.  You could use the note feature which shows up on each book like a little yellow post it note. But you can't bring them up as a list like tags.

Another option would be to use a booklist. You can create a list for each shelf, box or whatever.  You'd be able to bring up the list and see it more easily.  While tags are visable to everyone, notes aren't.  Also the think that tells you which list you have a book on is only visable to you.  It books the book list name by where it says This Is On Your TBR, RL or WL.

So if I post SWEET SAVAGE LOVE by Rosemary Rogers on my Shelf with the tag NC42 (which stands for New Collection Box 42) if someone requested the Rogers book my NC42 tag would show right to the end of the transaction? As soon as I saw the request I'd know immediately where the book was and not have to get into my database?

Sometimes I'll miss adding something to my books-I-own doc if I'm basically only adding it to PBS so then I don't know which box I put the book in. My tags would be fairly unique, I think. I've seen some showing that a book(s) are part of a series, or the month/year they're coming out, tags that a lot of people might use. I wouldn't have book condition, or that type of thing, either.

I'm not sure if notes would work as an 'instant' view of where the book is, and I already have book lists (books read and books I own).

Well, I took my Shelf off hold, posted a WL book which had a tag. The request was on Auto so it was accepted right away - but the tag didn't show when I opened the tab with the request. I'm disappointed that it isn't working the way I thought it would - could be I'm doing something wrong.

Back to the drawing board.

the tag wouldn't show on the request screen, but if you make a personal note, i believe it will.  it'll have a little yellow tag, like a sticky note over part of the cover, and then you can hover over that to read what you put in the note.  it sounds like that might work better for you there, but you wouldn't be able to click on the tag and get a list of everything from the same box or bookcase.

I'll give that a shot, Ellen. Maybe notes will work better for my needs. I don't necessarily need to have the list of all the books in a particular carton - just the whereabouts of the one requested book. As long as every book has a notation of where it is I'll be happy.

I'll work on some notes this afternoon - I have housework to do but it's a damp, rainy day here and it's much more fun to mess around with books.

It's a good thing it IS fun playing around with books - some people would consider all I'm doing to be too much work but since I had to cancel a request the other day because a book wasn't where I thought it was, well 'ya know it goes sometimes.

Thanks, Ellen & Mary. The "notes" option is going to work beautifully. I just posted a another WL book to test the option and the note IS attached to the book when the request comes up. This is going to work really, really well.

Wasn't sure how the notes worked so they were a second choice at first, but they're a great tool.

PBS'ers are fantastic.

If you don't need to pull up a list of them then the notes are best.  I use them to denote of a book is unpostable.  I've been posting books that my library has since I'm out of shelf space. No sense in keeping a book if the library has several copies.  So I'll put a note on the book "library". Then if it's requested and I don't have time to read it-I can jsut mail it off and add it to my library list.

I also have some books in shoe bags under my bed and I just put a note that says "bag" and I know to look there.  I'm not organized enough to not which bag though.

I like the "notes" feature also, - Im a Box of books member and I find it helpful to put a "note" on my books as Im posting them ...if there

are "little sale stickers" or anything about the book that I want the requesting member to know about the book that they chose from me.

I get a lot of comments thanking me  - from the requesting member on letting them know these little conditions of the book.

Ive also started putting little "notes" if my library has the book - so that I can decide if I want to order it, or..check it out from the library.

I love the little notes option.  I use them all the time.  I also like to put the date I swapped them.

I'm loving the notes, too! I spent a good part of Sunday double-checking my Shelf books - making sure exactly where they were and marking it on notes. I thought the notes would look/be different and wouldn't be useful but they're phenomenal.

Marking not just the box # where they are, but whether a book was bought new, or has a UBS sticker, etc., thinking of a couple of other options to mark on them, too.

I use the note feature to track WL lines too.  So I can read and post a book before it goes from WL to heavily posted.

My shelf has been on vacation hold for a while but I unheld it so some WL books could be posted Wednesday evening - had to bump up this thread to say, again, how much I'm appreciating the Tag option. I was able to know immediately where each book was and located them in the quickest time EVER when I had book requests.

Thanks again everyone!!
