Is there any oversight on tags?  I'm curious because I am seeing some odd ones. An Amy Tan book had one tag "17.21".  What is that--the price?  Or some secret code? :)

Just curious!

Thanks!

No oversight - but you will be less and less likely to see "weird" tags as more and more are entered in the system.  Patience...

From the help center:

What are they?

Book Tags allow you to mark books any way you like.

  • You can tag a book as "great" or "why would anyone read this?"
  • You can apply any number of tags to the same book.
  • You can view all the items in the database bearing a particular tag by clicking on the hyperlinked tag wherever it appears on a book listing.
  • Others can see your tags.
  • When you view a book you will see ALL of the tags you have applied to it, as well as the most commonly-applied tags for the whole club.  Less-commonly applied tags will not necessarily show, especially if a book has had many different tags applied to it.
Why do I want to use them?
  • You can tag books for yourself if you like: "ordered for aunt martha" or "I hated this author"
  • You will see the tag when you view the book on your Bookshelf, in the database etc.
  • We will soon have a way to view tags on the site so that you can use them as another way to "search" for books you might be interested in reading.
Will others be able to see my tags?
  • Maybe.  Others will see your tag on a book listing if it is one of the top-15 tags applied to the book or if they have also applied that tag to the book; otherwise others will not see your tag.
  • You will always see your tags in the tag list on a book, even if you are the only one who has tagged the book that way.

Marjorie is right. :) It may mean nothing to you -- but to someone, they're getting organized!

I guess I don't really see the point of tags like that being public.  Since you have notes, it's a bit redundant.  I can understand that ones that add categories and keywords which make a book easier to find being public.  But that's just me.  Probably won't use them myself.

Thanks for the explanation!

I love the idea of Tags, but I wish we could make them private, as I feel no one will want to see if my book is a library book, a bookcrossing book, or etc. But to me, this is a great help  to be able to know without having to go look it up on my shelf. I've been biding my time on tagging my books because of this, but I want to get started, so I guess the "public" will just have to bite the bullet and see my tags until enough are posted. Sigh....

Do tags stay in the system once that specific copy has been ordered?  I mean, if I apply tags to the book that means something to me, then my copy is ordered, do the tags get delete or do they stay in the system forever?

I think they stay in the system forever unless you can delete your own tags. Eventually we will only see the most common tags for books-like a specific genre or something that's helpful to more people.  As more tags are posted the more personal and less common ones will only be seen by the person who posted them. I  guess that's how it works. I am not a tagger personally.

Do tags have to be approved before they are posted to the system?            I ask because it is taking FOREVER for mine to show up.  I was tagging all the homeschool related books.

Supposedly only the most used tags will show up, but I'm seeing tags that are user-specific.  I just find them cluttery and annoying.  I can't see the point in even seeing the top-10 tags, even if they pertain to the book.  I can read the reviews and find out what others think about a book.  The description tells me what kind of book it is, and the subject matter.  What else do I need to know?  With all of the other features they can implement, I don't understand why they wasted time on this.  Maybe someone will find it useful - I certainly don't.

Jennifer,

You should be able to see your own tags.  If they aren't on there try again.  Let us know after trying again, if it still doesn't work.

The value in the tags will be in being able to search them.  It's true that If you are looking for a specific book by title you can read the description of that book.  However, if you like a certain type of book and don't know which titles to look for, you can search for books tagged with that type (for example, cozy mystery) and titles that you wouldn't know to look for will pop up.

I really love the tags system except for the fact that I do not have the option to have private tags. Everyone in the Historical Fiction forum has been making a huge effort to tag all the historical fiction we can find. It has been wonderful (or terrible, however you want to look at it LOL) for me!

However, I have a lot of pre- release items on my wish list, and I would love to tag them "Pre- Release" or "Not Yet Released" but I hate to clutter everyone else's screens up with MY tags. It would help me out a great deal though, and probably people who get me as a buddy in swaps and stuff. So I really hope we can get some private tagging options in the near future.
