I was checking out some of the most wished for books, and dug out a couple of books that I saw there was a big demand for. After posting them, I see that the ISBN of the books I posted is for the version that is in the Paperback marketplace for sale. So even though 180+ people are wishing for the hardback version, and I posted a paperback version...since it's the version for sale as a new paperback, it doesn't appear that it can't be ordered used from me...is this common? I have two different books that this has happened to. I honestly thought that as soon as I posted them they would be snatched up within a day or two, but they're not.

So now I'm wondering if I'm competing with the site and their new version for sale and perhaps if someone is searching for that title, my books aren't even showing up as available to order unless someone goes directly to my bookshelf.

If anyone knows, I'm curious as to how that works...

thanks!

Theresa

The marketplace has absolutely nothing to do with your bookshelf.  If someone wants your paperback version they can order it.  You are not competing in any way with the marketplace.

I do want to warn you that many of the most wished for books are for the audio or the large print versions.   Many times there will be hundreds of the paperbacks and hardcovers posted while the LP and audio are still in high demand.

If there's a WL for the paperback version and you posted that version then it'll get offered to a wisher.  Many of the books I have on my WL are available in the marketplace.  I'm waitng for the WL. The marketplace is just an option for PBS to make some money to help run the website and for members to get a discounted New book becuase they're tired of waiting on the WL, want to help support PBS or need a gift and want new.  But a book being available in the marketplace doesn't prevent it from being ordered from you instead.  When someone orders the book from FIFO it doesn't make them go to the marketplace.  And it doesn't make actual WL offers on books in the marketplace.

And Emily is right.  Sometimes one version of a book can be WL while there's 300 copies in the system of another version.  It's because people really want that specific version (harder to come by cover version, large print, tradesize, audio etc..,)

I don't know if PBS does it anymore, but at one time if a person placed a book on their WL, they would get a message saying that the same book was available in a different format.

It does still do it but members have the option to turn that off (I have it turned off) and it doesn't work with all editions.  Sometimes they don't connect for some reason or another.

If you post a book people can order it from you, the PBS Market will never affect books being offered through the PBS system.

But, just because there is a Wish List for the hard cover doesn't mean there will be any demand for the paperback. Often with the best sellers people read the paperback, then Wish List the hard cover for their permanent collection and swap the paperback. That can result in a lot of paperbacks available while the other versions are wish listed. You can tell how many copies are available on your version by adding it to your Reminder List. A high number of copies doesn't mean the book won't get requested, it would just explain why an order for it isn't coming quickly.

I am having a simliar problem and I dont think pbs is sending out those emails. There are two members wishing for Spitfire Girl by Lily Baxter, but the paperback. I paid good money getting my hands on a copy, but it's a hardback. I would like to notify the members wishing for the book that I have a hardback of it and would love to send it their way, but I can't see who is wishing for it. I'm now stuck with this book and I wanted to find a home for it.

Tara, you can post in the Book Bazaar forum that you have the Harcover version, but there isn't a way for you to contact those members wishing for the paperback version. They may be getting the e-mails and be members that can't use hardcovers (an example is some members with arthritis don't order hardcovers because they are hard for them to hold) or the wishes may be left overs from inactive members and the emails go unnoticed. It looks like there is only one copy of the Hardcover in the system so if that is you the first request should go to you.

Thanks. :) I will try that Book Baszaar though, just to let people know I got some rare books posted that they may not have heard of or be looking for but may want upon being told about them. :)

Just do be aware that it may not be that the emails aren't getting through--it could be that people have them blocked or perhaps they are only wanting one particular version of the book for some reason. For example, I mostly want paperbacks, especially if it is for a quick series read...I often read those in bed so a paperback works well, whereas a heavy hardcover is difficult to hold up. If I have a hardcover on my WL that means it's a new release by a favorite author (so the paperback isn't available yet) or else I am collecting it for my Keeper shelf--in which case, I've likely already read the book and don't want the paperback.

Then there are those with poor eyesight who only want the Large Print or Audio versions, so the emails about paperback and hardcover copies available are useless. The book bazaar is the best way to let people wishing for books know you have alternate versions.

I have several times gotten e-mails notifying me that a different version of a book on my WL is available. Usually, it turn out to be the hardback. Those are more cumbersome to read and carry, so unless it's a book I really want, I'm not iinterested.

And for those I *am* interested in getting in whatever form there is, I usually check out the WL button for other options, just to make sure I'm on the list for every version I want, especially odd ISBN versions. There are a number of books where I'm 200 out of 300 for one version but 1 of 1 for another. I realize 200 copies of the first may get posted first, but it only takes 1 of the other version for me to get it!

Craig, you have the option of turning off those e-mails for a particular book (check the bottom of the e-mail for a link) or turning them off altogether in My Account --> Settings.

Also, it's possible that a person only requests one version of a book, not realizing that there might be another (PB/HB, etc) , in which case they'll only have that copy on their WL, or they might have maxed out their WL and have to make a choice between PB/HB or audio.  I request by the name and author so I sometimes will have several copies of the same book on my WL and then delete the others when the first available copy is offered to me.

Sometimes (but not always), when you request a book and it is WLed  a list will come up showing you every possible version of the book - Audio, PB and HB and then you can pick more than one.  Unfortunately, this option doesn't come up all the time even when there is more than one version available.

Glad you were able to get the book requested quickly.  Pat
