Hi all,

So I was reading about vacation holds and want to make sure I understand correctly....technically I will have access to PBS but no access to a printer for a few weeks so can't accept requests in that time.  I will likely be posting books that I finish on my bookshelf during that vacation hold so I won't forget later.  From what I understand, any book I post AFTER the vacation hold is applied will not be available on my shelf and cannot be requested until after the hold ends, is that correct?  Is that the same whether the book is WLd or not?

How does the Hold affect your Bookshelf?

  • The books that are on your Bookshelf at the time the Hold goes into effect will be hidden from requests.

  • This does not include books that are involved in a Wish List Hold or an active transaction.
  • The FIFO order of each book will be preserved during the Hold; it will not "lose its place in line" to get requested.
  • Books that are already involved in an active request will not be affected by the Hold.
    • Any book request that was submitted before the Hold went into effect will not be affected by the Hold
    • Any book request you submit at any time (before, during or after the Hold will not be affected by the Hold.
  • This means that all auto-emails associated with an active transaction will be sent to you as usual
    • You will still get auto-emails asking if you have received a book that is en route to you 14 and 21 days and 25 days after the book was marked mailed by the sender.
    • You will still get "second" and "third" notifications for previously-submitted requests to which you have not responded.
    • You will still get auto-email reminders to mark your outgoing books mailed before the deadline if you have not done so.
  •
  • Books newly Posted to your Bookshelf during a Hold will be hidden from requests

transactions that are already active will remain active.  Books that you post while on vacation hold will not be available until you remove the hold, WL or not.

ETA: Do not remove the hold, post books, and then hold again because if you post WL books while the hold is removed they will become an active transaction and will not be included in the hold.  As long as you post the books while your account is on vacation hold, they will be hidden and unavailable.

If the problem is the lack of a printer, you could still handwrite the address. You won't be able to use printed postage but you could still mail books if you can get to a post office.

You are correct Stefani, anything you post while your Vacation Hold is in effect will remain hidden until the Vacation Hold is removed, even the WL books. Only transactions that have started before the V.Hold takes effect would continue. This is why we tell people who have a WL book that they do not want to roll to the next wisher to put their Shelf on V.Hold., the V.Hold will "capture" the WL book and hold it until the it ends.Once the V.Hold is removed, all WL books are automatically posted so you'd want to browse through and see if there were any you wanted to apply the individual Hold to before removing the Vacation Hold.

Yes -- we can post books while our account is on vacation hold, and they won't be available to be ordered until we take the vacation hold off.

I remember getting my head around the wrapped gift analogy several years back, but I believe that help doc is out of date, even in regard to wish list books. If we post a wish list book we can't send, and the member being offered the book declines our offer, normally our offer would be passed on to the next wisher in line.  But if we place our bookshelf on Vacation Hold before the wisher declines the offer, the book is now returned to our bookshelf (where we can delete it) rather than passed to the next wisher.

Also, we can place our account on vacation hold, post some books, and check to see whether or not they have a big "W" (wish list) next to them.  If we then choose not to offer those books at this time, we can place them on individual bookshelf hold before taking our bookshelf off vacation hold.

So I think the change came when they introduced the individual bookshelf hold feature.

Thank you so much for all the help guys.  I thought I had read it correctly but the help doc kinda made my head hurt a little, so I wanted to be sure smiley

And thanks DG, I know I can always handwrite, but I have really fallen in love with the Instant Credit of printed postage and I don't really want to worry about getting to the post office during my weeks off work (they're all I'll get the whole year, I'm going to revel in sloth!).

LOL, I know the feeling! That Instant Credit is really handy.

And enjoy your vacation! Reveling in sloth are one of my favorite kind. :)
