I order a lot of my stuff from the UK ,and I also have a lot of older books, pre-ISBN.

My question: When I list a book without an ISBN, same title and probably the same book, (eg, not a critical edition) and another person has it wishlisted, do they get that notification of a similar book or not? Should I even bother listing books without an ISBN? Like a bunch of old penguins, classics, mysteries, scifi, etc?

From the Help Center:

If your book does not have an ISBN but its title/author is the same as one on the Club Wish List:

  • These "similar-item" email alerts are NOT sent out for non-ISBN items
  • You can advertise your book in the Book Bazaar Discussion Forum if you like
    • There is a topic in that Forum just for different versions of Wish Listed books
    • These "advertised" items often get quick requests.
    • To get to the Book Bazaar:
      • Place your cursor over Community in the toolbar at the top of the site
      • Click Discussion Forums in the menu that drops down
      • Scroll down the Discussion Forums main page to see the Book Bazaar in the list
      • Click Book Bazaar to enter that forum.

One thing some members have started doing is adding tags to the WLed versions saying "similar book posted under XXXXX ISBN". This will show up on those members WL page letting them know its out there. Another is to put it in your siggy line so that it is visible everywhere you post.

Another hint, you can use tags to alert people about your version.  You can tag a WL book with a tag that tells the PBS-generated ISBN so members interested in other versions of the book can find out about it.  "Alternate version, see ISBN XXXXX" tag can direct interested parties to your non-ISBN version.

There is also a thread for books like these in the Book Bazaar.  You can list your alternative versions there as well.

But please -do- list your old and non-ISBN books, there are members here that will want them and give them homes. =)

besides the tag option you can also put in your signature line what you have (maybe genre or authors or something so that your signature doesn't get too long) which will drive people to your shelf (hopefully!)
