I have been reading alot about WL and how members are moving up quickly but the reason being posted the most are members have put their accounts on vacation hold.   Does this run true with available copies and FIFO?    If a member activates vacation hold - is their copy of a book removed from the system?   If so does the book go to the back of the line or keep it's place?  I am only wondering because I have seen a couple of  book drop quickly.  I am curious.  thanks

I wasn't positive but thought if you put your account on hold you stay in the same place.  So when you take it off hold if your book was #2 that's where it'll be when you come off hold.

I looked it up in the Help Docs.  Sometime you can find the stuff and it makes sense and sometime you can't or it doesn't!  Now we both know fer sur!!!

How does the Hold affect your Bookshelf?

  • The books that are on your Bookshelf at the time the Hold goes into effect will be hidden from requests.

  • This does not include books that are involved in a Wish List Hold or an active transaction.
  • The FIFO order of each book will be preserved during the Hold; it will not "lose its place in line" to get requested.
  • Books that are already involved in an active request will not be affected by the Hold.
    • Any book request that was submitted before the Hold went into effect will not be affected by the Hold
    • Any book request you submit at any time (before, during or after the Hold will not be affected by the Hold.
  • This means that all auto-emails associated with an active transaction will be sent to you as usual
    • You will still get auto-emails asking if you have received a book that is en route to you 14 and 21 days and 25 days after the book was marked mailed by the sender.
    • You will still get "second" and "third" notifications for previously-submitted requests to which you have not responded.
    • You will still get auto-email reminders to mark your outgoing books mailed before the deadline if you have not done so.
  • Books newly Posted to your Bookshelf during a Hold will be hidden from requests.

Thanks Geri - I searched the Help Docs - I saw this but it doesn't really ans the questions about copies available.  It says that it hides the request but the FIFO order is preserved.  So I assume that the quanities will reduce only if  a  book is requested, mailed and rec'd?  Or..if the request is hidden then is the copy available also hidden until the account comes off hold!  I hate assuming.

It does hold the holder's bookshelf in the position it was in when going on hold.  this removes those books from avbailability until the hold is taken off.  The main reason (besides vacation) that people do go on hold is that they need time to be able to afford postage again.

Yes you move up the line while on hold-if you get to #1 while on hold it'll just pass you over until you are off hold again.

I don't know if the copies available includes the copies on hold or not.  Probably not.

I have my account on hold now.  Maybe I'll come off hold for a minute, reminder one of my books and test it out.

OK I put a book on my shelf on my reminder list: Black Dahlia by Nora Roberts.  While still on hold it showed 1047 copies off hold it went to 1048. So it does not show copies on hold.

Hmm I see this book ending up in the thrift store pile.

Thanks Mary -- I just couldn't see some of these books moving that fast :)

Maybe I will luck out and someone will request one of them before members take their accounts off hold!  There is only 1 copy listed and it would be mine - one can always hope!

Instead of a thrift store - see if there is a used book store in your area.  In NH/MA/CT there is a book store called Annies.  They will give you 10% of the book value towards a credit.  Then if when you purchase you can use 1/2 of your credit to pay for the purchase the other 1/2 is out of pocket.  Books are 50% off of book value.   I know they are cropping up all over the place. Some will give you cash and others credit.  You may already know about it - but in case you don't !

The nearest UBS is about 45min away and it's a horrible mess.  The books aren't sorted, she asks outrageous prices and then there are just cardboard boxes of books everywhere.

The local thrift store benefits an Adult Daycare for people with disabilities.  I've found a lot of WL books there for .25 to I don't mind donating some back.
