PBS has advised in another post that the 30 free swaps associated with a limited membership do not expire at the end of the membership term. So essentially a limited membership is not really associated with a particular term but rather with the pre-purchase of 30 swaps at a cost of $0.40 cents per swap.  For a standard membership to be more cost effective a total of 50 swaps would need to be used within the membership year. Is this correct? If a limited member uses the 30  swaps before the expiration of the membership term can they just extend their limited membership and immediately acquire an additional 30 free swaps?

Standard membership has unlimited swaps so you would get as many as you want. Standard also has a 500 Wishlist and if you use printable postage, one .55 fee is waived. It all comes down to which services you want and would use.

I'm not sure about the particulars but if you are a limited and you use up the 30 free swaps before the end of a one year membership you can upgrade to standard by paying enough to move your membership from limited to standard. There is a place in the kiosk to do this I think.

I don't think you can renew a limited membership in less than a year.

I am limited myself and I am only requesting 2 books per month and then I have 6 individual months where I can request one more book so there are 6 months where I request 2 books and 6 months where I request 3 books. That way I will use exactly 30 requests for the year.

Unclear as under limited membership it says "extend your current membership plan". Hence the reason for the question. If you extend when do the 30 credits show up.

I would read that to mean extend as in go from limited to standard. I don't know if that is right or not, but that would be my guess. Were you thinking of paying a fresh 12$ and getting a new set of 30 swaps? I would think it might be more economical to pay 8$ to go to standard and you would have an unlimited number of swaps instead of just 30. I'm only guessing though. Maybe you should ask somebody at the club.

That is exactly what I was thinking. For example, it I use my current 30 by year end upgrading will only get me 6 weeks whereas extending limited would get me an additional 30 swaps. Guess I will ask the club when it is an actual issue.

If you upgrade, you will go from a limited to a standard member. This does not give you any swaps per se as you can use as many as you want during your membership year. You'd be better off becoming a standard member in year two then upgrading at the end of your year one.

This is my experience - if you have a unlimited membership and it expires on - say 30th June 2015, if you extend your limited membership now - ie renew it before it is due, you will immediately get an additional 30 swaps, and will be a limited member with an expiration date of 30th June, 2016.

Got and answer so thought I'd share

Dear Mary,

Thanks for writing in. The difference between the two annual memberships is not just the Swap Fee/Free Swap issue; there are other features that the Standard Membership provides in addition to fee-free swapping, that some members consider important and worth the fee.

To answer your question, the 30 Free Swaps that come with the Limited Membership enrollment don't expire, and you can make the purchase of Limited Membership in advance of your current membership expiring, but you aren't able to apply the additional Limited Membership to your account until your active Limited Membership expires  So if you use up your 30 Free Swaps before the year of enrollment is up, you can do one of the following:

(1) use Printable Postage to send your books, and earn a Free Swap for each mailing, OR

(2) pay $0.49 for each book request you make after the 30 Free Swaps are used up, OR

(3) upgrade to Standard Membership for $8.00 - when purchased in the Kiosk, this upgrade will last until the end of your active Limited Membership enrollment.

The best choice for you would depend on things like: how many requests you will make after the 30, whether you use Printable Postage, and if you want the other features of Standard Membership.

We hope this information is helpful. Have a great day!
