This is a different movie from the Clint Eastwood quick-and-dead. It's about a family going west who run afoul of a band of villains, and the man who ends up helping them out.
The hero's name is Con Vallian, and there's a villain/character in it named The Huron, as well as the usual band of baddies.
Good, clean story, moves pretty fast.

A man called Vallian. They were nothing to him this family of greenhorns. Yet Vallian found himself involved with them. Easteners who dreamed of the pioneer life never expected to meet violence until they come up against a ruthless band of outlaws. Now Vallian knows he the McKaskel's best - and only hope - for survival.
One of my favorite Louis L'Amour books, even when it was a movie!
