Hey Lea!  "launch the letter opener & make a hole in wall"  That was funny!   I use scissors, I received a book in brand new condition and you got it..........I ended up cutting the cover almost entirely in half!  Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!

I've just used scissors to cut at the corner along the short edge. Then used a razor-blade letter opener or exacto knife from there. I haven't damaged a book yet...

<<so if you launch the letter opener and it makes a hole in your wall it's totally your fault>>

OK, once I was doing something similar only I was using an ice pick (rusty of course) and launched it into my palm, near my thumb - about 1/2 inch in.  Do I have to tell you how bad that hurt? Plus I had to go to the doctor and get a tetnus shot.  I was so embarrassed.

Didn't you know that mummywrap can preserve a book for thousands of years ? How do you think does an archeologist inspect a mummy ?

Just kidding. :-)

Hey, I totally appreciate mummified books. My postman can't seem to figure out how to properly close my mailbox, and it faces west (where the winds generally come from when it rains). :-/

I finally bought myself a pocket knife to use to open mummifed books as I cut 2 WL books trying to get them open.  Since using the knife I have not cut a book but I did slice the palm of my hand pretty good and had to have stitches.  I learned that I must be careful when using sharp objects (I think my parents tried to teach me that 50+ years ago but I must not have learned too well).  LOL

I go with the pocket knife along the seams method.

Just take a knife and slip it under the wrapping, anywhere on the book.  Once you make a big enough slit, you can get in there with a pair of scissors.  Works for me every time.  I love mummy wrapped books!

If only we could read books via x-ray, lol.

I use a paring knife. Rather it be taped like a mummy than damaged.
