Mystery with race murder as crime in Natchez, Missippi. Penn Cage is successful prosecutor from Houston (capital case and execution part of story) who returns home to physician father who has his own problems with Ray Priestley, who killed a man for him. Penns wife just died from cancer (father administered death drug). Young child daughter remains. Father had been prosecuted by Leo Marston, big man in town/state.
